I am left speechless You Know they Had Been Using Husqvarna Outside of the U.S. in recent years for Garden tractors under the Murray Name I don't Know why thy Just don't start Producing the Brand In House instead of sub contracting it out. Now I owned a Murray 12 Hp Lawn tractor In the Past with the Only Tecumseh engine That Never Gave Me a Problem Heck I bought the Murray Used even Only Problem I Had with it I had to Hold the PTO lever to keep it engaged when Mowing the Lawn and I had to replace a Nut that Came off the steering arm to the front axle Other than that is was a Great Lawn tractor and did very well with a Front Blade for snow removal. Another thing I always Liked about Murray replacement Parts Never cost very Much so it was a decent Machine to repair and for the Price You Paid for a Murray they were rather reliable Machines Compared to other in that same Price Bracket . I have to say I’m sad To see it as another MTD Clone. It’s too Bad Murray had Lost the Scotts Lawn & Garden tractor Contact Because they Never really recovered from the Money they spent re-tooling They Might Have still been there own company today:thThumbsU

I guess the sad reality is people want to pay as little as possible for their garden tractors.
Enthusiasts (like the folks on this forum) know they can buy older machines that will last nearly forever and are worth rebuilding when they wear out. But, just ask your neighbors if they would replace their lawnmower with a new model before their old one is flat-out dead :biglaugh:
People come into my shop all the time looking for a "good used" garden tractor and I tell them I've never seen one. It's like finding an "affordable" apartment in New York City, check the obituaries :goodl:
At least Briggs is still headquartered in Wisconsin and actually employs Americans. I think we all know why stuff isn't made the way it used to be anymore, at least the name is being kept alive by Briggs and not Cheng Hua Corp.

And as for good used, if you found something old then its probably good, My 1989 Snapper with the 12.5 twin briggs out cuts my 18hp Craftsman, out cut my 18 hp Murry, and does better than the new 18 twin engines, just something about old stuff ...... I just got a 1969 18HP Evinrude and the impeller went out so of course it overheated, LOCKED UP, and after the new impeller it runs perfect, now try that with a new outboard .
Same reason most all my "rides" are old (88 Ranger, 89 Camaro, 95 36' Residency motorhome [Ford 460]) they are easy to work on the computers are primitaive in them. I also got a 05 Accord, dont get me wrong that V6 flys and has tons of power, but its a #&^$% to work on and does not have the build of the older stuff

Just to clarify, I believe 98Murray is eluding to the fact that Murray as a brand name has not been sold in the United States since 2005, he is not questioning the country of origin.
This was probably part of a deal to keep MTD happy so they would buy more engines. Briggs getting into the mower/tractor market caused a lot of backlash from their engine customers who now veiwed briggs as their competition. MTD had been developing a chinese engine for the riders.
The old Briggs & stratton engines I found to be good. My 1990 White lt has a Vangaurd 14 twin that runs super! I'am not gonna say I hate b&s :Stop:

I looked at the new Murrays at wal-mart just the other day. They look small compared to most riders, and the tires are really small. I think ill stick to the old ones:trink40:

Looks like what MTD did with Bolens. Compare the new units to those of 30 years ago and it's beyond black and white.
My parents bought a new Murray snowthrower a couple years back from Menards and it says "made in china" on model number sticker way at the bottom of the machine. I'm told by B&S cust. service that B&S engines are made here in the USA with USA and "global" parts. Not sure about the murray tractors though.
