MTD Gold Help

Had a lot of success with an issue I had with my LT1000. I have recently acquired a newer MTD Gold mower model number 13AP605H504 it has a 20HP Courage Koehler motor. It only has about 30 hours on it and I got the mower for $500. Problem is I turn the key and nothing. Not even a click.

When I jump it off the starter it rolls over and starts. Now I notice that the headlight wires are all melted from laying on the exhaust I am guessing. I am wondering if this maybe shorted out the fuse? I've scanned the machine quickly in the dark last evening and I am not 100% sure where the fuse is located.

Questions, could it be the fuse causing it to not start as a result of the headlight issue. Secondly, anyone know for sure where the fuse is and how I go about changing it.

Thanks in advance.

Oh ya I should mention that I am not 100% sure how to start this thing. There are a ton more features than my LT1000. Two pedals, brake and throttle, some yellow button on the ignition panel, and I am not sure if the wheels are engaged as my LT has a pull bar at the very back that takes it from free wheel to in gear mode. This new mower does not have this and it currently free rolls atm.

Welcome Coatsy
You can get the manuals for your tractor here: http://www.mtdparts.com/equipment/m...05H504&serialNumber=ENTER+SERIAL+#+(optional)

Read through to familiarize yourself. You may find everything you need in the owners manual. There are safety switches that need to be engaged such as the seat and pto.

You got a lot of tractor for $500.

Thanks for the manual. This mower is certainly high end compared to what I am used too. The guy that owned it before basically let it go. It's sat for two years. I've drained the gas and changed the oil and found the fuse, which was blown. Off to the parts store to get another fuse and also a new fuel and air filter.

Ok just replaced the fuse. It rolls over, but doesn't seem to be getting any fuel? I pulled the spark plugs and they are burnt black, they are dry as a bone. I pulled all the fuel lines and replaced them all the way to the carb. When I pour a little fuel in the carb it fires right up but only runs until the fuel there is burned and then stalls.

It will not start on its own fully choked. Shouldn't the plugs be soaked with fuel rather than dry as a bone and looking burnt??

Thanks

Need to clean the carb also if it has antibackfire solenoid on carb make sure it is working

Will I need to pull the carb right off the mower to do this?

Not to check that solenoid but it has to come off for a proper cleaning .is it single or twin ? you can download service manuals from kohler web site.

It is a single, and I believe it has an anti backfire solenoid as you suggested.
It is on the bottom of the carb and has a red wire coming off the middle of it. The wire is super tight and bent at a very tight angle.
There is no click when the key is turned to the start position as I have read in some other posts that there should be an audible click when this solenoid engages?

Guess I'm going to need to tear it down again.

By the way, I replaced the plugs with an NGK Vpower style plug. Do I need to gap set this type of plug?.

Yet again this site solves a problem. A big thanks to you 38racing. I took the solenoid out and it was nasty dirty. Cleaned it up and tested it before putting it back in and it was working fine. Screwed it back in and the mower fired right up.

I wish there was a way I could buy you a beer. :thThumbsU

since we are in the same province at least it would be canadian beer and no UPS brokerage fee to ship it. LOL
and just reminded me of story about 2 years ago. A friend said his neighbour had bought a kubota and was selling his other ,still quite new , mower but he could not get it to start. I went over to check it out. And now I just remembered that it was an mtd gold with kohler engine. Anyway I determined it was fuel related and suspected that solenoid. I removed it and we tested it right at the battery. It would not retract. I told him there were 2 options , get a new solenoid or or snip the plunger off that one. He never answered in words , just handed me the snippers. And it then started.
