I'm reasonably new to the forum and I've found it to be addictive.

Found this number on the flywheel cover. Trying to figure out model # and sn#.The numbers are hard to see but this is what I could make out.
326431 01394 01 7396071. The number 4 in that series looks more like a small triangle than #4.

I'm also trying to determine the correct model for my MTD. I bought it from a friend and he had downloaded a manual for a 146-990A. What is the difference between the 990 and 990A. I have a 16HP Hydrostatic. I have attached pictures. Any help will be greatly appreciated.:thanku:

Welcome OldSoldier,
The first 2 numbers of the model no. mean it's 32 cubic inches. in 71 the rated them at 14hp but after 71 they were 15 and sometime later 16hp. The first 2 numbers of the "Code" are 73 which means 1973 so your tractor, if original engine, is probably a 73 or 74. The engine having been produced in 73.

As far as the manual goes I think the number you want may be 144-990. The number system for the manuals goes something like this:
First 2 numers "14" mean Garden Tractor, 3rd number is the year, 990 is self explanatory, and the "A" at the end means decade with the 70's tractors not having the "A" and the 80's tractors using the A to designate decade. Other members will correct this if I've made an error here, Rick
