My buddy showed me this add and i was thinking about getting it , wondering if its a good buy or not let me know what u think, they said it needed some carb work,

I would say it's a safe bet as long as there's no major problems . JMO

If it is all there and seems like the only problem is the carb, I would go for it.

A rebuild kit for the carb is around $21 (US) and is easy to do (I just did one).

They are using a hydraulic cylinder to lift the plow and not the original hydraulic lift used for a mower deck.

It looks like there is something funky going on with the hydro drive lever too, or maybe it's just the angle of the picture. Seems like there is a lot of "customization" on that 990. No mower deck? 3 point hitch? What is up with the original hydraulics if the hoses have been run to the front? If it runs and drives I'd go $200, If it doesn't, pass on it or about $100.

:rauch10: i don't know what you guys are thinking but just ask yourself whats the plow worth? whats the motor worth ? etc. or any part of this tractor. the parts are so hard to come by buy its a no brainer, you can allways use or sell the parts. its like lay's potato chips bet you can't eat just one.and so it will be with mtd 990 you will buy more then one .note i restored 3 of them myself sold them all for over a 1000.00ea.one for 1400.00 buy it:thThumbsU

You make a point tommypaul, but your restos must have been very nice to have commanded those prices.

Of the 4 990s I've owned, all ran when I got them, and cost anywhere from $0.00 to $450.00.

A non-running, heavily customized tractor with rain-gauge for a muffler just scares me a bit.

:greendr:d-dogg you know, you have worked on these tractor enuff to know that parts are hard to find.no one on this forum just buys one. my retro have been posted here before.it has a lot to with your location here in washington state mtd 990 are very hard to find.and well liked when restore to there gorly.that tractor is in better looking shape then some that i have seen on this forum it a great place to start :trink39:note i sold a grill on ebay for 50.00 + shipping good luck in my opinon just buy it good day
