It has been a while since I posted what I've been up to. With graduation, 2 vacations and finding a "real" job, I haven't had much time to tinker in the garage.

I started out the summer fixing and then being offered a price I couldn't refuse on my 6430 and I also found new homes for my 6259, 8481, and 10400. I also built a 10545 (minus the electric start) from gold series parts I had lying around. Fast forward to early July and I blew up the 3 speed in my 22261 and was fighting sheared drive keys on my 10520. Add to that a dead coil in my 10545 left me with just my C21ZPN. After a week I realized for the hills I deal with I needed self propelled. What I found was a toro proline 22177. It is rough and has clearly lived a hard life but a new throttle cable and some other parts has it running like a dream. It cuts nice but I'm not a huge fan of the one bar bail and it is very heavy. It remains to be seen whether I keep it or sell it off.

More recently, I picked up a 10600 and S21ZSN for a very good price. I started tearing into the 10600 earlier this week and discovered that the engine has been replaced at least once in its life. The new powerplant is off a capstan drive model and when I took the Walbro off it I was disappointed to see that the reed plate does not have a pulse hole. I was debating on just throwing one of my spare F series' on it, but the current engine has 110 cold PSI of compression (according to my early 60s Snap-On gauge) and the crosshatching is still present in the cylinder bore. I think I'll probably drill a pulse hole and re-seal the current engine rather than swapping it as the deck is heavily pitted and has a few chips taken out of it. I will have to keep my eyes open for a replacement.

All the S21 needed was a coil (which I have plenty of spares) and a carb cleaning. Although, it surges wildly and sounds like a dirt bike (due to the rusted out muffler). however the drive works flawlessly and even though the original powder coat is in terrible condition, it cleaned up nicely. It may stick around, but more than likely I'll sell it off as I don't really have much of a use for it.

You grabbed those two off CL (Harrison City), didn't you? I live pretty close to there and saw that ad... but my other half would have killed me if I bought them. :)

Do F mufflers from steel decks fit the aluminum ones? If so, I have a couple here if you need or want one.

Yep that's where they're from. And no the steel and aluminum decks use different mufflers.

I saw them on Craigslist too lol. Was really debating buying them to use the comm parts to clone a 10651. I also saw your ad for the S21 this evening. When I first got on here I wondered why that picture looked so familiar, lol

Don't you already have a 10651?

Got the 10600s engine torn down, a pulse hole drilled for the walbro and put back together with new cranks seals. Just need to get a pipe plug for the hole left from the capstan drive driveshaft.

Well I got the 10600 back together and running but discovered a large crack in the deck from the discharge chute to one of the bolt holes. Guess I'll have to find a new one.

That sucks, hopefully you’ll be able to locate a replacement deck, I think a few residential models used the same deck or a similar one just without the holes for the tank stand and front guard? There’s a complete 10600 on Facebook rn for $60, but I guess a complete mower wouldn’t really help. Worst case scenario, if you cant find another deck, the commercial parts on that mower are worth a whole lot more than what you paid. I love the black tank mowers.

It does, but it's not a huge deal. You're correct, the push supreme f series pushers used the same deck as did the duraforce 10424. Eventually I'll find a good one like I did for my C21ZPN. I want it to be a nice user for years to come as it was one of the 2 push commercials I always wanted.

Here is the crack in the 10600's deck. Not pretty. Also, the pitting is pretty severe and there is evidence of a previous repair on the other side of the deck. With the engine being not original, I don't feel compelled to save the original deck. Although, I hate to lose the original decals.

I have had decently good luck carefully removing the decals with a razor blade then adding a little adhesive of your choice to reuse them, if you use a razor blade to smooth them when reapplying they will come out pretty smooth.

Well the 10600's deck is even worst than first (or second) thought. I did some sleuthing with the wire wheel today and I found the ugly cracks and holes and epoxy repair to the non discharge side of the deck. Let this be a cautionary tale to thoroughly look over any mower you want to buy and don't fall for the sellers smoke and mirrors or get caught up in it being something you want.

Thanks dan, I didn't know that they were all that rare.

In a side note when I went hunting for a deck for my 10600 I also came across an unknown 2 stroke suzuki commercial toro. For $15 I thought what the heck and bought it.

It is not the same deck design as my 22177 and is missing some parts. The engine is free and feels like it has good compression but it is the residential 3 speed, not the HD. I have no idea if it's worth rebuilding or not. I will try to get a picture up this evening and if anyone can help me ID it that would be appreciated.

what makes that toro rare is first -it costs 1300$ and 2nd no one ever sells them . I looked for years and never saw 1 for sale anywhere. I took a dead Suzuki toro com and fitted the kawi monster from another mower. its a real beast and way out preforms the Suzuki .

Finally got the 10600's replacement deck back from the powdercoater and all back together. The front wheels need repainted but I'd say it's another project completed. Too bad it took so long to get back as grass season is over in SWPA.

The 10600 looks great glad you got it together, how much did the powder coater charge do do a deck? And did they strip it down for you or did you have to strip it yourself? It’s a shame mowing season is over but I can’t really complain about a break. There is snow on the ground and I still have a few customers who want mowed this week...
