Today I backed the 312 into the shop so I could swap the PTO shaft onto the 317 and give the 312 the old cooling fan from the 317. With that done, it seemed like as good of a time as any to change hydro fluid on both. 10 quarts of fluid, 2 filters, what could go wrong?
I started with the 312 and it went fairly easily until I tried filling with the hygard. How are you supposed to get hydro fluid into that little 3/8" nipple when it's buried under the frame rail like that??? I ran to the hardware store to get a 3/8"-1/2" adapter, a 45 degree elbow and a longer nipple so I could get a funnel in there. Once I got the paint cleaned off the sight tube I was able to fill it to the proper level.
Then on to the 317. I'm a little leery about this hydro since I had no way to test it when I bought the tractor. I opened it up and what came out could only be described as a very dark brown caramel. It seemed to be debris free but I couldn't completely tell because I knocked a bunch of crud off the bottom of the tractor when I took the filter off. At first it came out just in a dribble. Then I opened the fill cap and it poured out much quicker. I only got between 3 & 4 quarts out of it which didn't suprise me since the sight tube was cracked. I replaced the sght tube & filter and started to fill it. Forr some reason this one didn't fill up so easy. The fill tube would fill up quickly and then it would "burp" letting the fluid go down some & then do it again actually shooting fluid out the top of the fill tube. This has me a little concerned thinking there may be some blockage in there. I did finally get it all in and then put a 1/2" socket on the cordess drill so I could see if anything would happen. I was able to get it to move foreward & backward with the drill so I'm hoping that's a good sign.
2 questions. 1) when I removed he driveshaft way back when, I noticed that the roll pin had a heavy wire running through it to keep it from coming out. When I had the 312 fender pan & tank off I saw the same thing on that one. Did these tractors come from the factory with that or do I have several people adding it just in case.
2) Where does the fuel filter belong? There wasn't one on the tractor when I bought it, is it just an inline filter or didn't it have one at all?
