ok guys, today i was mowing at the school with the 420. i go to turn and the wheel pops off. the snap ring was just an oval. what size are the snap rings. and then i couldnt get it started. i had opened the carb. up and tried to start and it just spewed gas. so i put it on reserve and it didnt spew at all and started but you could tell it was flooded. so do i need a new fuel filter or air filter or what? this is too good of a tractor to not use or to sell.

To mis-shape the snap ring into an oval, there's either been some high speed turns being made, or someone put it on damaged.

The snap ring part number (from Deere) is W23122. The dimensions are:

Groove Diameter 0.906 IN
Groove Width 0.086 IN
Width 0.078 IN
Radial Width 0.151 IN
Free Inside Diameter 0.906 IN

The carb sounds like it might be a float stuck issue. If it was spewing fuel, the fuel pump, and fuel filter are letting fuel from the tank to the carb. If it was flooded when trying to start, it may have been a one time problem. Need a bit more information to give you a better answer.

when i run it to mow for say an hour ill turn it off to do some other stuff. like weedeat or go to the restroom or eat lunch or something. ill go back out and it will just turn over and turn over. sometimes when i do get it started it will run only when it is on reserve tank or if the gas is off or if i have the choke pulled out.

The cause of the starting issue could be fuel related, electrical related, or mechanical related. Heck, it could even have problems with all three. I'm going to assume you don't have a tech manual. You may have a carb problem, or there could be an issue with the fuel lines, maybe the intake is partially plugged in the tank, or there's a crack or split in the fuel lines letting air in. Do you have access to an air compressor? Before refueling the tank, disconnect the fuel line at the fuel pump and blow air back into the tank. If that does not resolve the issue, I would consider replacing the fuel lines, including the intake and screen inside the tank. The fuel filter may need replacement as well. Don't get one from an auto parts store. Get one from a Deere dealer. Some of the fuel filters at auto parts stores don't perform properly on the low fuel pressures of garden tractors. Still could have a sticky float. Without being able to look at the tractor in person, this is sort of a crap shoot at best.

You have the service manual versus the owner's manual?

There are some pretty good troubleshooting procedures in the service manual.

My neighbor had his 318 cutting out, not restarting, and it turned out to be corrosion in the fuse holders. Just a thought.
alright. so just look at the troubleshooting section.
Well, either you could do it or pay the dealer $85/hr to do it. Those procedures are the first thing he's going to run through.
alright, thanks guys.
