Model 3140

Greetings from Australia,

I am looking for a work tractor, and have an opportunity to purchase a JD 3140 that has hydraulic issues.
The pto wont work, the 3 point link arms, and the steering is likewise. The vendor suspects an internal leak that is a known problem with these.
I also notice the front drive shaft seems to be awkward placed and perhaps vulnerable to damage.
I have looked on google and it seems the brakes deteriorate and contaminate the hydraulic oil?

So I am seeking advice, -are these good performing, long lasting, and trouble free[once the hydraulic problem is solved]
-or are they troublesome, unreliable, and hard to get spares for.....

Thanks for your help

Are you very knowledgeable on JD closed center hyd's? Closed center hyd's can be very difficult even for an experienced tech to diagnose & repair. Trying to diagnose a hyd system that doesn't operate at all is even more difficult. JD tractors of this era have a long history of failed/leaking hyd supply tubes that are intended to furnish oil to hyd hi-lo & hyd ind pto. Most brake problems are caused from moisture accumulation in hyd oil.

If I was going to buy & repair the tractor in question it would have to be cheap/cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:banghead3
Thankyou for your reply. I am a professional mechanical tradesman , but I lack any specific knowledge of these systems.
I could sense some danger with this tractor, and you have confirmed it for me.
The tractor is cheap, but even for free I think I would hesitate, then decline.

Far easier to wait, save money, and pay more for a known model with a good record of service.

I suspect I could repair this machine only to have it fail again in the near future.

Thankyou again for your help
