My JD 216 has been using a little bit more oil than I like. Been running Rotella SAE 30. Its been really warm in TN and been running the mower a lot. I am due for a change and was going to switch to Mobil 1 15w50 - is that to heavy for this engine ?

I wouldnt run that, I'd use synthetic 5w-30 or 10w-30

Have you caught the recent Castrol ads for their synthetic? They are claiming to reduce wear by a factor of three over Mobil 1. I'm seriously considering it. I run 15-20% Lucas addititive to my dino oil currently.

I run 15w50 in my bike and in my BMW. Its one of the Mobil oils that still has a pretty aggressive additive package geared towards older engines. I am not seeing any leaks on the tractor only a little smoke. I figured I would try a round of the heavier oil and see if the consumption changed.

Have not used Castrol oil since my first BMW and that was 10+ years ago.
