Hey gang,
I figured I would share the story on the MF8 I picked up today. I got it for $160. Here is the story and I will add pictures at the end.

Dad and I went down this morning to check out that 8, it was about an hour and a half away. It was in pretty good original condition, the front grill trim was still in one piece. They put a different seat on it. The one headlight knock out plate had fallen out which is no biggie because I am putting headlights in it. The battery was completely dead which we kind of already knew. The owner said he tried jumping it but it wouldn't start and he sprayed carb cleaner in the carb and it fired right up. He also had the original owners manual with all the dealer info and date of delivery which was april 1974 but the serial numer says it was made in 73. I got it for $160.

We got it home and checked for spark, we were good there. I pulled the carb off and the gas was old. I tore it apart and I have never seen a carb with so much gunk in it LOL. I got her all cleaned out and put it back on. Still wouldn't fire except we got one puff once in a blue moon. I tore the carb back off again and I forgot to clean the one important hole. The only one that feeds both the needles from the bowl LOL. I got that cleaned out put it back on and she fired right off. It wouldn't take throttle though and I went to adjust the one needle and dad was like watch don't get shocked here the plug wire didn't have the rubber boot and it was shorting against the choke cable. I had an extra boot and put on and she runs like a champ. No smoke what so ever. It is a tecumseh replacement motor and it looks like an original would have. It doesn't seem like the governor is set high enough though and I didn't get a chance to tinker with it much other then to wash it and take some pics and mow with it a little bit. I need to adjust the mower deck but other then that she seems to do good. I also had to adjust the hydro lever, when you would start it and take the parking brake off it would start hauling *** in reverse LOL. I got that all adjusted and she is working good.

Here are the pics:

Thanks for the comments. I need to see how it is doing as far as charging the battery. The ammeter shows negative when it is cranking but it isn't showing positive when it is running. It starts withing the first crank now that the carb is adjusted and running right. So I don't know if since I put a new battery in it maybe it isn't sensing that it needs charged or what. I will have to see if it drains the battery over time.

I am going to take pics of the lawn tomorrow. I started mowing with it and it was like it was mowing unlevel and one side was cutting closer then the other so I took the deck off and sharpened the blades and then adjusted the deck and she started striping the lawn. I need to get that pic because you can see where it was mowing weird and where I adjusted it plain as day. The other plus is I already got our 10 year old to mow two stripes with it. Pretty soon my time with the mowers will be all play LOL.

On another note I am going to pick up an old 62 bolens 600 with snow blower, snow blade and mower deck for 400 next weekend. I still have yet to finish the restoration on the 1053 he just got LOL. I think I am going to be pretty busy this winter.

Congrats, George
You really got a well cared for piece of history. It always makes me feel good when one of gets a hold of one of these babies and brings them back to life or uses them to bring another back to fighting trim. I don't know If any of you guys did any counting but the production numbers on some of these models was very low. A little over 2400 for the MF8Geared w/recoil start and not that many more for the MF16 or MF7 Hydro. It's up to us to save each and everyone we can find. I've gotten one guy starting to collect and restore, with the hope that any tractors I can't afford he can and will restore them. They're beautiful and rare, and we all know how we feel about finding one in good shape for a great price. Good Luck

Hi

Nice 8. Mine was a mess compared to that. Mine is gear, electric start. I am in the process of removing paint and rust from all the parts and priming them. It's a lot of work, but these tractors are beautiful when restored. Have you checked the front wheel spindles. Mine were totally beat and I had to make new ones.

I think the spindles are a little worn, mainly where the wheel rides and not so much at the pivot in the front axle. When you turn sharp it doesn't want to straighten up unless you fight it a little bit but that may be from the fact the tires almost turn completely sidways unlike the 12.

I need to see if it is charging the battery or if the ammeter is shot. It shows a little negative when cranking but when running it doesn't show positive. It ran with the old dead battery so I am thinking it is just the gauge.

I have to finish up my dad's bolens and then I am going to start on one of the masseys. Probably the 12 first since that will be the one pushing snow in the winter. I will take pics during the whole thing and make a thread for the restore when it comes time.

I know this is the massey forum but here is the thread with what I have done with the bolens so far:

Hey George, I for got you were looking for deck covers for the10/12 mower deck. I don't have either a 10 or 12 or decks for them. I know a guy in Bristow Oklahoma that has two parts tractors, but I think he wants 250 for the both of them, don't know if he would sell parts
