Hello All,

While digging through the parts diagrams to figure out my C8 Swifty, I was struck with the idea of fitting the 6 start or 4 start gears to go even slower.

I have to assume that the external features should be the same as they fit into the same case, only the interior bore is different with Non-Swifty having more material left in place to carry the cross shaft for the diff pinion gears.

Thinking this through, all I should need to do is bore out the ID of the Ring to match the swifty version and BAM = Not So Swift-a-Matic.

Believing that I cannot be the first person to think of this, can someone recall it being discussed / done ?

For 6-lead: get the final drive out of a 400-series 4-wheeler. Much less effort.

I have one sitting on a shelf, earmarked for my LI-8 project, which I've been saying for years I'm going to do :(

I don't think there's a good solution for 4-lead. The non-swifto ring gears are narrower than the swifto ones, so you'd have to machine up some kind of spacers to get the width right, while keeping the internal surface suitable for the guts of the swifto mechanism.

I think it would be a bit of a project. If you do it, :wwp:

Hello jrd,

Thanks for responding, and confirming that I ain't the first to wonder about this.

Great tip about a preexisting solution for a 6 lead 25% less Swift-a-Matic.

Would the Worm from the 400 Rider fit the C-8 shaft ?

Or would I need to get an LI worm to make it work ?

The bronze gear of a differential is called a worm gear. The worm is the guy up in the chassis, as the worm turns, it pulls or pushes the worm gear of the differential around.

A ring gear in a Gravely is in either the High/Low planetary, or the Forward/Reverse planetary assemblies.

There are four lead single speed differential worm gears and lead worms, but they will not work with a two speed differential.

As jrd mentioned, there are six lead Swiftamatics in the four hundred series four wheel tractors. With the right parts, you can convert a LI to an LI8. I have one and it is great for brush hogging.

There were a few Commercial Kohler power two wheelers that were six lead, and maybe even a four lead roofing machine, but I have never seen one.

Thank you Sir for the clarification of nomenclature.

I'm so happy to know that it's been done, works, and I can do it too.

I plan to use this machine for snow blowing and the slower the better.

May I ask you guys what would be a fair price for the entire differential assembly with worm from a 400 series to make the swap ? And are there any other useful parts in the 400 that would be wise to include in a deal ?

I think it makes sense for me to track down these parts, bag em, tag em, and add them to my parts cellar

Anyone care to recommend someone to jingle or best place to post a wanted notice.

You would not need to go so slow if you had more power.

It takes a certain amount of energy to move snow from point A to point B. So to do the job right you either match the ground speed to the load or you increase power to match ground speed. In short, get a Pro16. Your ground speed issues will be over.

Not sure abut your location but Pro-16’s seem to go for Top dollar on the East. Engine conversion about $500, a Comm12 or better will be $200 on up depending. The diff from a 400 series generally don’t go for much more than $100-. I got a diff from a 500 series tractor for my L, with shipping I may have payed $100- for it.

An L8 in good tune with duel wheels will definitely power a snow blower with good results. Now...if the primary use is for snow clearing and or you live in an area that sees large sums of snow I’d probably source a comm12 or better, as Richard noted, the higher HP two wheels will make the task easier.

Hello Guys,

Thanks for following on.

For my particular situation, it's not that I expect the machine to be short on power, but that I the operator am short on power and prefer to work slow and carefully.

Unfortunately, I am one more minor injury away from back surgery due to degenerated disc, so I have to be careful and take my time.

I did notice a 2 wheel late model on Ebay with the roofing attachment, and on the side of the hood is a black sticker with white letters reading "6 Lead"

Glad to read in your reply that a 6 lead diff should be around $100 so all I need to do is be patient and wait for the right deal to bubble up.
