Stupid OCD question I'm sure, but it makes me cringe to start anything at full throttle. When I start my 188 I put the throttle at beyond full to close the choke and as soon as it fires I back it down to minimum throttle. It works, but many times it will start smoking and seem to load up. If I try to increase the throttle before it is fully warmed up it will often die. Is it best (even though it makes me crazier) to start on the choke and then just back it off to full throttle?

When out using it, I usually never shut it off. I'll just drop it to the lowest throttle setting, load the trailer, pick up sticks, whatever, and then throttle back up to move.

Something about starting it and running full throttle makes me cry on the inside.

I feel the same way you do. I need to choke mine to start it and it always smokes when brought off choke. I thought of putting a separate choke cable on it but like other ideas it just isn't going to happen. I've got more important projects to worry about.

All the more reason to use synthetic oil that clings to engine internals just that little bit better.

I hate it too, but look at generators that have no other setting than wide open, and two strokes that have to be started at full throttle.

May I suggest leaving the engine only partially choked for the first few seconds of run time? That will control the RPM to a certain extent at full throttle.

I use synthetic in everything I own (rotella T6) and have thought about running a separate cable to actuate the choke lever at a lower throttle setting. My biggest concern is this winter as I plan to plow snow with it.
