I recently stumbled upon a 98 LT1000 with a 17hp Briggs that has been run out of oil. The rest of the tractor is in great working order.
I currently have a 94 LT1000 with a 14.5 Gold Series Briggs that runs perfect.

I know generally you dont want to go backward on hp size, but,... would this be something I can swap the engine over from the 94 to 98?

Mower I am looking at with bad engine.

Mower that would be donating the replacement engine.

Thanks for any help in advance... You guys rock!

You'd have to compare the bolt patterns on the engines, but a Briggs-to-Briggs swap usually works out ok, even if you have to drill new mounting holes.

I second Kbeitz. The engine might not be damaged that badly, especially if it is equipped with a low oil shut off interlock.
Drain what's left of the oil, put on a new filter, add oil, and try it. At worst, you've lost the oil and filter. At best, a running tractor for the cost of oil and filter.
