I have worn out two pto belt in as many days one to the point its broke and tangles up on the deck pulley system, I routs it exactly as the part diagram says to, what am I doing wrong? I use a 1/2 x 60 pto belt, am I using the wrong belt?

recommend using OE on Cub Belts.......

While it depends upon which year the LT1042 was made for which PTO belt, 60 inches is waaaaaaayyyyyyyy too short.
According to Parts Tree:
A LT1042 made in 2008 and after takes a ½ inch by 109 inch belt.
A LT1042 made before 2008 takes a ½ inch by 96½ inch belt.
