I've heard that it's recommended that you should loosen the chain on your chainsaw before storing it for any period of time to take the tension off of the clutch. It makes sense but I've never personally thought about doing this to prevent clutch failure on a chainsaw. When it comes to handheld equipment storage I've only heard fuel related discussions but has anyone been loosening the chain before storing their chainsaw?

I always put my saws away with a looser chain than how I run them.

I run mine a little loose to begin with, so I never thought about loosening it up more to store it.

It depends on how tight it is. Generally I wouldn't loosen it up. However if you had just tightened it up when refueling then only ran it a minute or two and quit I would.

Problems occur when tightening up when hot then putting it away.
