Looking to buy my first GT!

Hello there. I am new to the forum as well as the Garden Tractor world. I have found two GT's for sale in my area (seems to be a very reasonable price $100.00 each) and I have not seen them yet in person, however, I have a few pictures. From the pictures and the Craigslist description "Does not run". I have emailed the guy for more pictures and info, production year, mower deck shape, manuals, why did it quit running, leaks, is the engine seized up, what shape the transaxle are in, has it been rebuilt before, or has it been parted out, etc... Here is all of the info I have about them so far. One is a Simplicty Sovereign 3416H and the other is a Ingersoll 224. Neither run (which should not be a problem, I hope. I have rebuilt a few motorcycle engines and old riding mower engines when I was younger and my brother just completed his tech school small engine repair. We are both new to GT'S, however; I think we can figure out how to get either one, or both, running with the help of this forum, online research, and our somewhat well supplied tool inventory). I am expecting that both will need quite a bit of work, a fair amount of $$$ and plenty of time, but I think either one or both would be great projects to work on this coming winter and hopefully have it running by next spring. The idea behind getting one is to run a Tiller for the wifes garden, my mother inlaws garden, pull a small trailer sprayer, a small box blade for the long gravel driveway at my inlaws house. I wanted to post this and see what advice I could receive before I go check them out and which tractor would be best suited for the tasks at hand. Both have the mower decks, and neither one comes with attachments, which will be another time consuming project of trying to find some attachments these GT'S can operate.

Well they both look pretty good, obviously far from pristine but doable. I'm sure you'll use some skills getting them back to everyday use again. These days, you can take a worn out engine and factor the cost of rebuild and do some internet searches and find prices on new engines which come pretty close to not making a rebuild worth it. Just depends really on the condition to start with. They'll need a top notch ground-up cleanup, service and repair. Lots of guys believe modern hydros just don't hold up as well as a gearbox for heavy ground engaging. For the price you're paying it's worth a try. Might end up with good experience in transaxle rebuild/repair. I know you know: Bearings, bushings, linkages, lubricants, adjustments, blades and belts... They all need to be looked at and dealt with. Where's the breather? Are the tires in serviceable condition? Sounds like you and your brother have your work cut out for you but it could be a fun experience and you should end up with at least one good keeper. Welcome to the forum!

Thank you Sir. I saw the cleaner/breather missing in the picture. The tires on both hold air and will stay on the GT's until they atleast get running. Both will most likely get ags, for and aft if we can get them in working order. have already priced rebuild engine kits for both and a possible repower for the Case. And i am researching transaxles and possible rebuild kita for both, just in case. My uncle owns 3 salvage yards all over oklahoma. I called him and asked if they had either one of these GT's out there by chance, he said he has several riding mowers and such out there but he will call and let me know and send pics. Hopefully he does so maybe I can get a parts mower if need be and save a little cash for some attachments. Yes a top to bottom cleanup and complete repaint is in order for both. The paont will have to hold off until we get them up and working without leaking. Then the following winter will be the repaint project. If ALL else fails I will have two parts mowers for the future or to part out for guys on this forum. I hate to see something so well built, and built to last just become a parts mower. Even if it takes a repower for both and alot of TLC, I believe we can get these two running and have them restored within a reasonable time.

Well come to find out before I could make it down there, the guy sold both tractors, didn't even have the common courtesy to ask me to come by sooner, offer me a higher price or anything, he just sold them and didn't think to tell me.
