In the spring it was sooo wet that i had to plant my corn twice to get it to come up.When it started to grow it was still cool and wet growing at a slow rate. Now my corn plants look a mess! tassels are coming out at all heights of 1 ft to 5 feet!very non uniform.I will be very lucky just to get a few ears this year. How has your corn crop been doing?

Sorry to here that. My corn has been ok this year. I did all hierloom corn this year. My yields were not all that great, I had a lot of empty stalks. I think next year instead of planting 2 long rows, I'll to 4 short rows. It's supposed to help pollenation. I did one row of Country Gentleman sweet corn and one row of Rainbow Inca sweet corn. I can say that while they are more tempermental than hybrid corn, I think they taste more like corn and less like sugar.

I am just starting to get ears to form. The stalks are about four feet high with lots of silks present, but tiny, tiny ears. The tassels have been out for weeks. I'm just not sure that I'm going to end up with anything.

My corn isn't doing as well as it usually does. A lot of the ears are a bit smaller than normal and very few doubles that reach full size. I noticed something else this year too. I have a LOT more suckers than ever before.

After a bad hail storm shredded everything I should have replanted but in a few days the corn rebounded. I irrigated pretty steadily and it flourished. Tasseled out well but as the silks developed I noticed funny things happening to the stalks and some of the ears. Corn Smut. Evidently the fungus was spurred on by the beat up corn plants and flourished. About 1/3 of the crop was affected and those that weren't never developed good ears. With the County Agent's blessing I cut everything down and will burn it where it lies. :crybaby: No more corn planting there for a couple of years.

Don't feel too bad I don't think I'll even get one ear. I planted 3 rows and only 5 stalks came up. None of them are even a foot high. Of course this is a first year garden and I don't know what I'm doing at all. Good luck.
