Well it's that time of year when I start to think I want to rip the front yard up & re-seed with nice seed. I probably should have last labor Day to beat weeds but I didn't get around to it. One reason is as you can see, when cut nicely, the lawn doesn't look too bad but it is a lot rougher than I like after I built the house. I would like to be able to mow in high gear but as it is I have to keep it in low as it'll jar your fillings out if I run too fast.

So my thoughts are to box blade the whole yard, seed fertilize & roll it. Another is to disk it up, broadcast seed & roll. And the last idea is till with the 647, seed & roll.

What's the best that you guys have done before & should I wait until late summer when it has time to start but the rainy & dry hot weedy weather is over more??:dunno:

Whatever you do get it growing fast. Even if you have to put a lot of annual rye in there.

If you make a nice seed bed it will erode like crazy on your slope and you will have the same bumpy issues all over again.

I would plan on spending a couple years seeding, watering, seeding... You might consider a pre-emergant as well. There are only a couple that I know of that will allow seed to grow when used. Otherwise if you get a hot dry summer all you might be growing is crabgrass.

i'm no expert, but i would work with what you have. you could overseed
s
with an overseeder, fertilize, irrigate, one of the most important things

on the menu, in time you will get what you want without tearing out

the lawn you have. i started 3 years ago with a lawn i totally neglected

for quite sometime, now its really looking good. tearing it up doesn't make

a lot of sense to me,

Thanks everyone---Orangaemen1--that's the way I was thinking as well. I think I'll take my time and build on what I have already.

Next question---Since the groung right now is so soft from the frost coming out, would it be a good time to hit it with the lawn roller to smooth it a bit or will it compact the grass too much?

I don't see what is wrong with what you have. It would appear that it would keep lots of folks happy with seat time. Feed it, mow it and give it enough water and it is 100 times better that some I seen around here. But whatever, good luck and happy mowing.

now is the time to roll. roll it when it is soft so that it takes out the roughness.
