I am having quite a time mowing my yard with my tractor because of all of the small hills in it and some "valleys" that are also in it. My neighbor said several years ago he had his yard disced(is this a word?) and then whoever disced it put out more grass seed and fertilizer and dragged it with a drag harrow and it smoothed his yard out a lot he says. Does this sound normal or even right? I'm not wanting to tear my yard up, but if it will level it all, or atleast make it smoother, I will. Anyone??

To really level off a rough area you need to get it back to loose dirt and then smooth it out. You may need to blade it to grade then drag it smooth. Once everything is to the grade you want you can have it disked or tilled and seed it. An option, if the ground is not too uneven, would be to fill the low areas and then seed them.

Just what we've done and there are probably a number of as good or better methods.

You have a few options and as I recall rock isn't an issue there, if you were a client of mine I could give you two options.

Till the entire area then we would use a box blade followed by a landscape rake, seed, fertilize, light rake, roll and be gone.

Fill the low areas with garden soil, roll, seed, fertilize light rake and be gone.

Unless the soil is really compacted, I would go with the second option and where you live, seed will be germinated and grass growing in 8 days.

If you have any spots that hold water when it rains get some fill and level them off. Get a disc break the ground good. Disc it north and south then east and west for example then section harrow in a circular motion. Too late in the year to do now unles you plant rye grass . I would wait till spring. I can't tell you how many yards i've done this too especially since katrina. Hope this helps.:thThumbsU

If you have a $7,000 harley rake use it, but if not you might consider a pulverizer. I just bought one last week. It's not the best with grass already in place, but has worked pretty good.

These guys on here know far more than I ever will about working dirt, so I would listen to them over me. But I felt like I had to add my 2 cents about the pulverizer. If found one on Craig's list almost new for a good price.

Good luck!
