Hello All,

I have a 2185 Cub with a CH18S Kohler V Twin engine.

One day after removing the hood side panels and the grille to look for what sounded like a small exhaust leak, I started looking at the exhaust system.

The right side dumps into the left side exhaust tube and then flows down to the muffler with the left exhaust.

Now what keeps the left exhaust from blocking or slowing down the right exhaust gases??? Or the other way around??

The right side has further to travel and may be blocked for a split second there by causing a small loss of power and increased heat.

Would it be better to have two exhausts one for each side flowing into their own muffler???

I remember on our old Ford and Chevy cars we would always try to install dual exhaust to help performance.

I should not think about these things because it ends up costing me money to fix something that ain't broke.

So what do you think?

I just placed a want ad for 2 exhaust manifolds to test my theory.

See the attached pic of an extra CH18S engine I have and look at the exhaust...yes....no????

If you want to get technical, then yeah, equal-length exhaust headers are the way to go. However, you're not talking about a high-performance engine turning 9,000 RPM - you're talking about an air-cooled small engine governed at 3,600. That being said, it's not a bad idea to try and modify that system, it could flow better, I'm sure. It is such a short length of difference in pipe, though, that between exhaust strokes on either cylinder, the one with farther to travel will still have time to make it past the short one before it sends its pulse. That's just my 2 cents :) I'd like to see what you've got in mind for the dual mufflers.

I own a CH18 myself in a 2186, so our setups are identical, by the way :) I swapped out my big box muffler earlier this year for a smaller, better flowing one that I welded in. Ended up going back to stock because I wasn't happy with it. I wish there was an easy way to put true duals on the Commands in the 2000 Series, but the way the hood and side panels are designed, it's a bit difficult. It would either require cutting of the sheetmetal, or running the headers down and under the side panels and then back up.

Hearing a Kohler Command Twin idle with no muffler is like sonic bliss, by the way. They have a beautiful rumble to them.

I agree on the sonic bliss, I have also had mine at an idle with no muffler and it is a great sound. I revved her up one or two times and my neighbor thought I had a race car in the shop, I love it.

I plan on going out through the top of the side panel or straight up through the hood with a hole big enough to clear the mini cherry bomb mufflers that I am looking for. The hood would be held down by posts and pins like regular race cars.

Ok, I get ya - so the hood will lift straight up to clear the pipes and muffler?

Both of my pullers with P-Series Onans exhaust straight up through the hood. Make sure your pipes are long enough for the exhaust to dump above your head/face level when sitting on the tractor. The exhaust WILL blow back in your face.
BTW talking about a nice sound- A P24 Onan straight pipes, sounds like a small block Chevy.

Yes, the hood will lift straight up if I go that way. After looking closer I see that the exhaust would exit out the side real nice if the side panels were off or notched out just to clear the pipes. I'm checking on small 50 to 90 cc motorcycle mufflers right now, they come with a curved exhaust pipe and the pipe size is almost perfect and they are chrome!

Used cycle mufflers are cheap if you can find em.
