I am in the process of recommissioning my old trailer and notice the band that is on the front part of the leaf spring is broken. Do I need to get this replaced and what function does it serve?

Thanks,

It keeps the leaf in line with the rest in the stack. In my experience these usually break going over bumps, it breaks on a hard rebound. Replace it with something even if temp fix is a couple high quality SS worm gear clamps. This little part helps keep trailer sway from side to side spring movement to a minimum and also minimizes spring deflection on rebound unloading.

I've made them with flat stock bent unto a u and drilled holes at the ends and tightened with a bolt that ends up looking somwhat like a d link. You definatly need that band. If your leafs move they don't help each other support the load and if a leaf rubs on your tire it'll wear the side wall and blow out
