I read and article in the Gravely Gazette that told how great the leaf mulching attachment worked on the 30" mower with the twin blades. Can those be bought new or will I just have to keep looking for one used? I've been whatching ebay for 2 years and can remember seeing any.

I don't know for a fact, but I think that they are as rare as hen's teeth. I've seen a few pieces of them pass through Ebay a time or two, but not a complete one. Unless I'm wrong, the bag is the hardest part to get because they liked to rot out.

I think you are talking about two different things... the leaf away bagger and the mulcher plate. Mulcher plates pass through Flea Bay from time to time... leaf away attachments normally bring good money if they are complete. I have only seen a few over the last few years.

I just picked up a mulcher plate/guard for my 30" this weekend and am anxious to try it out.. will post pictures after it is installed.

Is it just a plate that bolts across the front of the 30"?

Here is one that recently sold on E-bay: HERE

The procedure is to move the rear (tall) guard to the front of the 30" mower and install this guard on the rear. It has holes in it and also has a plate the runs along the bottom of it to hold the clippings and then release small parts out the back. Pretty simple actually and could easily be built with an extra rear guard if one wanted to.

Thanks Jimmy. I might have somehting like that in the barn in a bunch of stuff I bought somewhere. If I remember right, it looked like it was attached to an extension that you might see on the front of a 30" But it had holes in it. I will take a look but at least I know what I'm looking for now.

If you have an extension with one row of holes along the bottom you have a chain guard minus the chains. Another very nice addition to the 30" with 106 especially if you are doing a bunch of rough cutting. My dad has one and when I see another one I plan on snagging it for my bush hogging deck. The mulcher I have is being prepped to go on my deck with cross blades.

Sorry for the confusion. I didn't even think about the mulching guard when I posted.

Jimmy, thanks for setting it straight.

On a side note about the chain guard; be very careful with them. After they have logged a good number of hours of use, the holes that the chain links run through will elongate with wear. The one that I have have elongated to the point that the tip of the blade will catch the last link in the chains. They make wonderful projectiles and a few of the chains have been ripped out of the guard.

When I get to it, I am going to take the guard off and weld up some material under the links to reform the holes.

Funny you mention the worn holes.. didn't ever think of that. We did replace all of the chains on his and mounted them on a piece of 3/8" bar rolled to match the front of the deck. Adds some strength to lower lip so it doesn't roll under as easy.

That rebar is a good idea. I like it and it would cut down on the welding a lot.

I can't believe I've been asking you guys where to find a 30" leaf mulcher and after you described it I came home to look in the barn because your desription sounded like something I'd seen. Tell me if this thing I found in m barn is a mulching plate.

Yes.. you just have it sitting upside down. To mount it you remove your short front guard and install the long rear guard on the front. Then you install that on the rear of the mower (toward the tractor) with the flat plate toward the ground.

Thank you very much. I'll order twin blades from Richard tommorow and start mulching leaves.

About a month ago I picked up a junker L that had the brackets for the handlebars (but rotted out) and a blunt blade the guy said was used as a leaf mulcher for the 30" mower. I'll post some picks tomorrow. Also got some 30" blades that have a "lift" welded to them

Here's what you want it to look like when you get it done. You also want to se the blades up as high as they will go.
I got my leaf mulcher put together today and it worked very well. I had one question. I definately worked more efficiently driving backwards. There was an unmistakeable difference. Do you think if the mulching attachment was put on the front and put the regular rear guard back on the rear of the mower it would do the same job as me driving backwards or was there some other reason that driving backward did so much better?

My dad claims the same thing with out his mulching guard, just a chain guard on the front. He swears by pulling across leaf piles backwards and it will not only chew them up but help to work them down a bit. Since he still has my mulching guard right now... I'll be a few weeks trying it out.
