So, my 10550 locks the rear wheels when I try to mow in reverse. It's most problematic if I'm on an incline and try moving backwards. Do you think the trans might still be partially engaged and that gravity may be taking over before the belt disengages? It also seems like the inside wheel locks when you turn it around to do the next row of grass. I know my silver and gold three speeds will do this if you have the bail partially engaged, so I am wondering if this is just a quirk with this machine or if it needs repair? Let me know before I tear into it. I'll probably make parts out of it knowing my patience level or lack thereof. The machine makes 115 lbs comp cold and the deck is mint, so maybe I'll just tear it apart as a spare should the 22261 have an "incident".

Two of my 22261s that I recently took apart had the exact problem.

One of them had broken parts in the WHEEL ASSEMBLY. One side had a missing Friction Ring and worn Clutch Washer while the other side had a broken Rocking Key.

The second one had all the parts in good working order but someone had taken both sides apart on this mower and put the wheel assembly back together wrong. These wheel assemblies have several small parts that need to go back together in the correct order.

I would try greasing first, if that doesn't work then I would look at the wheel assembly. The replacement parts are cheap enough to just order everything new.

Thanks, Bruce. I was thinking that might be the culprit, but was hoping of something else might be the culprit. It isn't exactly a difficult repair but it's somewhat far down on my list of projects. Oh well, you know what they say, "if it has T*&s or wheels, someday it's going to give you trouble"...
