Lawn Boy R8239AE Resurrection

799 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  cbx4evr
Been working on a R8239AE I was gifted last fall. See post here: #424

After many hours of cleaning and inspecting I finally got it running yesterday. Still needs a little fine tuning but otherwise seems good. Had to replace coil.

My issue right now is I am seeing oil splatters around the area of the output shaft for the self propelled. Suspect I need to replace the seal #608224. Other then eBay I don't have many options here in Canada. Ideally if I could find the seal dimensions I likely can find a replacement at my local bearing shop. Anybody have those or alternately a seal to sell so I can avoid the eBay thing?

Thanks

Take the old one out and take it with you. Should be a snap for shop to match it.

Agree.
That seal still shows available for $12.08 from Toro/Lawnboy. Do you have a Toro dealer or servicer nearby? Bill

Closest that may be a source is an hour away. I'll give them a call but after closer examination it may not be the seal after all. Hard to see anything with the cover on. Going to hook up a temporary fuel source and have a better look.

Changed the title of the thread as I can see that I may have a few more issues to sort and figure keep it to one thread.

Right now I suspect a carb float issue as the filter element is getting soaked with gas. Although the float needle held pressure I'm wondering of the cork float itself is a problem. Looked good when I cleaned the carb with no damage. See a plastic float on eBay. Those any good as a replacement?

Other question I was curious about is if the starter can be eliminated and replaced with a different pull start? I don't have batteries for it and have no real need for electric start.

I found that seal as cheap as $5.49 on eBay with free shipping. Bill

Don’t forget I am in Canada. Nobody ships free to us. Cost me $12 US to send a $4US starter pinion here.
I’ll answer my own initial question. The drive seal 608224 measures 0.5” ID and 0.875 OD. Equivalent to a #4931 from seal manufacture’s.
Question about the starter pinion. I don’t have any experience with these electric start systems. Is the pinion spring supposed to be strong enough to push the pinion gear all the way back yo the starter? Mine gets it about 1/2 way and stops. Just clears the flywheel but I can see by the condition of the pinion gear that wasn’t always the case. I tried stretching the spring a bit with no improvement. Anybody ever have to replace the pinion spring?
