I picked up this 5236 over the weekend for $15. I figured it was a good parts investment but it turns out it's a complete mower. The deck is crack-free and the only hole is the one you see just ahead of the block-off plate. Four green wheels, and a blue on/off/primer knob and starter handle and gas cap. Very low compression; I did have it running by starting it with a drill, but that's the only way it will fire. This is my third 19" D motor of the summer along with a 5232 and 5234.

The D405 here appears to be in good condition otherwise. I'd like to get it running good and add it to the fleet rather than break it for parts. Here's what I have to work with:

I have a complete D motor off a 7260 (the deck was roached). It ran good before I pulled it; just a little slop in the bottom crankshaft bearing. This should be one of the first 2-ring pistons in a D-motor, correct? I can get the D# off the block to verify it was the original motor on the 7260. I already have a set of new rings for a 2-ring D-piston on the shelf. Can I swap over the rod and piston to the D405, hone the jug, and install the new rings on the piston from the 7260? Will that give me an all-needle-bearing rod and piston assembly for the D405 where I can use a 32:1 oil mix?

Good information Scott! I had zoomed in on the model tag and could tell it was 5236, Looks like a good candidate for some refurbishing. Bill

Looking at the picture thread on the forum, that hole in the deck ahead of the block-off plate looks to be factory, so maybe the deck is almost perfect?

Anyway, I'll tear into that D motor off the 7260 and see what the internals looks like and go from there. These 19" Mag decks are so light and great for trimming!!

Update: First off, on my first thread of this post, I incorrectly stated that I also had a 5232 - I actually have a 5234 and 5235 already. I'd love to find a 5232 Bricktop - those have really cool 60's styling and colors!

Today I pulled apart the D408 from the 7260 I had parted. The piston is in pretty bad shape. I'd feel pretty bad jamming that into a freshly honed jug. Does anyone have a 606607 piston that's usable or a line on where I can buy one? IS TEW back up and running with the pistons they were once offering? I have new rings and the roller-bearing rod and caps looked good.

PM me with any offerings and we'll work out a deal. Thanks, guys!
