L120 Drive Belt Probs

19844 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Flintlock1776
Ok so i inherited this tractor with my new house a couple months ago. So mainly i was driving up a hill abusing it hauling tree rounds. I blew the drive belt. This is fine i ordered a new drive belt, but the drive belt that blew basically came off and i dont know how the belt goes. I have attached it to the drive and both middle pulleys and the back one for the transmission. But the belt is super lose and it will rub some metal piece, pretty sure it is part of steering column/linkage (Pic 1). Mainly i just need how to route or properly tension the belt.
Thanks
Steve

In the photo on the left, you have the left side of the belt on the wrong side of the steering shaft. The shaft has to be unbolted and lifted up. Run the belt to the front pulley and then replace the shaft. The belt goes around the shaft.

There is a full service manual for the L series mowers in the Reference Library on this forum. You can download it. Look at page 284, and it will show you how the belt should be routed.

This is the link to the service manual:

Well the nut on the steering shaft is pretty messed up but i will try to fix that. But if i put the one side of the belt on the other side the belt will be even more slack. And i just dont see how to tighten it. From the pictures it looks like i have routed it right except for steering shaft thing...
thanks

The belt may appear to be loose; but when you push on the accelerator, the positions of the two idlers will shift. This puts tension on the belt.

Look at the photographs toward the end of the maintenance manual. It actually guides you through the belt replacement step by step.
on a hydro tranny unless the brake is pressed/locked the belt ALWAYS has tension on it and keeps the hydro pumping. reroute the belt, unlock the parking brake and see if it is tight then.
once i took off parking brake all was good once it was routed properly with steering column thanks all...

Good time to take it to a JD dealer and let them go over the whole thing. Be like me, drive 'em, use them but for maintenace lets stay away from earning "here's your sign" and let a pro do it :sidelaugh
