Hey everyone. I have a L110 that is a few years old. I need to add some fluid to the hydro-static transmission/differential and I cannot seem to figure this out. I have looked at the manuals and such. However, maybe I'm just trying to refuse to believe that I have to disassemble a good portion of this mower just to add some fluid. Can someone please tell me that he manufacturers of this mower really weren't so insane that they designed this thing to become my worst nightmare as it seems to me so far, LOL. I crawled all around and under this mower and I cannot find anything that remotely resembles a fill plug or any likeness thereof that I can actually see.

First determine what type of transmission you have. Whether it is a Tufftorq K46 etc. There should be a label on the transmission itself that will tell you the type of transmission you have. Or if you have the Manual, it will be in it too. Then go from there.
But Tufftorq K46 is a sealed tranny and does not need periodic top-ups. What makes you think that it needs more fluid? Did you see a leak or similar situation?

The RR tire leaked down over the winter and fluid has leaked out of the axle seal from what I assume because it was leaning to that side. When I parked it last year the transmission worked perfectly. Last weekend when I aired up the tire, started it and took off it would barely move. I kept going anyway and after a couple minutes of mowing it completely stopped moving. I had to push it back into the garage.

If the axle seal is compromised, do not drive it any more. Topping up with fluid is not going to help. It will still leak. Driving it without oil could damage the internal components. There are so many videos on how to rebuild the K46 tranny. Not at all hard. I have done it twice last year on different machines with excellent results. Good luck with the repair.

You could just search in MTF there are a number of threads about the K46.

As Aluvaboy stated stop running Mower and fix. I bought a D170 with bad axle seal. I thought I was golden with just a seal and oil until it would not go up test hill.

Thanks guys! The help is much appreciated.

I do wonder why when the last time I used it last summer it worked like a new one. With it having sat for a few months, the tire went flat and just enough fluid seeped out the flat tire side. I'm wondering why it wouldn't work again with just adding some fluid? I understand that the axle leaking is a pretty good sign that a rebuild is called for at this point. However, my issue is, at this point I really don't have the time or money to tear into this thing and do a rebuild. My Dad passed away not too long again and I am trying to keep the grass down for my mother so we just need it to work good enough to get us by until she sells her place.

The easiest way to add fluid is to remove the trans from the machine. It is far more work to remove the fenderdeck so that you have access to the top of the trans with it still bolted in place. While you have it out you should replace the leaking seal and change the trans oil. In the JD stickies section there are instructions on R&Ring the trans and changing the fluid.

Thanks, Dad always enjoyed tinkering with this mower and he actually kept it up pretty good.

Thanks for the info. I may consider trying this when and if I can find the time. Right now, looks like I'm back to a push mower. It is a unbelievable to think the manufacturer was apparently not intelligent or cared enough to make a provision to add fluid to this thing without dissembling 1/3 of the mower. I understand the "sealed transmission" concept thing but there still should be an accessible fill plug as in such a case as mine. This is simply amazing to me.

Recently my mother has started to divide my Dad's portion of the estate between my brother and I, my brother has said he wants the mower so I may just explain all this to him and let him take it and get fixed.

Still need more help guys. I removed the differential, replaced the axle seal and topped off the fluid. It took almost 3/4 of a quart. I did not split the case. I put everything back together exactly as I took it apart and it will not move under power. With the differential lock rod (comes out the back) pushed in or out, it rolls free in either position. It's like it's stuck in neutral. Can anyone please give me some insight as to what might be causing this?

there is a procedure call a ''purge of the tranny'''.. do that.. it's simple to do..

I followed the directions for "purging" the tranny. Still, it will not move or even act like it wants to move. The fan/pulley is turning just fine but no movement whatsoever. Any more suggestions?

The normal problem in this latest situation is that you left out one or both of the woodruff keys that lock the rear wheels to the axles.

I sure wish that was the case. Both keys are in place. The axle is not moving at all. The fan/pulley is turning as it should but there is no movement at the axles.

That trans is likely finished.
That is what I am afraid of. Can anyone tell me if it is worth fixing or replacing the entire unit. More than likely it is the motor inside correct?

Everything turns very smooth and I did not see any metal shavings on the magnet.

That being said, I just sold a good used, just serviced T40 to a flipper for a unit he has that has done about the same thing your trans has done. Working perfect to totally nothing in an instant and nothing exterior is amiss.

This one worked PERFECTLY last season, it sat in the garage all winter and never moved. A couple months ago, I installed a new battery and took off mowing. I mowed approx. 30-40 yards and I noticed it started getting slower and slower until it eventually stopped moving at all. I assumed since it had leaked out some fluid on the garage floor (RR axle seal) that it was just low on fluid. I removed the entire rear diff, pulled out the old seal, cleaned the seal housing really well, greased up the new seal and installed it without any issues. I topped off the fluid to the mark where the manual said and reinstalled the unit. I made 10000% sure that I hooked everything back up exactly as it was before so there would be no mistakes. I did not move or readjust anything. I fired it up and this is what I am dealing with. Quite honestly this is an amazing thing, LOL, I did not touch anything other than a seal, filled with fluid, purged it and now it is doing this. WOW!

This mower has until now ALWAYS run and pulled like a tractor. It has always worked perfectly.

Being that it was 3/4 of a quart low you may have damaged a rubbing surface on the center case / valve body. These units rely on all the moving parts be totally immersed in oil. There is no pump in the bottom of the sump pumping oil to all the moving bits.

It would have been wise to have dumped all the oil out to see if there were any alum shavings in there.
