Yes. The oil spray is normal. When the piston travels downward, the air that is displaced blows the oil coming out of the pressure relief valve towards the front. You shouldn't run the tractor with no attachment though. The pinion shaft can walk forward out of the hi/low planetary and damage the spline. Most likely to happen if the tractor is level or tipped forward while running.

which is why you need the front plate if you want to opperate the tractor without an attachment. they have a pin inside to keep the shaft in place, and its a plate to seal the oil in.

Thanks for the replies. I don't normally run it without an attachment but the other day after doing some work on it I started it without the attachment to see if it would run and noticed the oil spray. I was just wondering if this was normal.
