I have a craftsman with a 22hp verticle mount v-twin engine. I was rolling the yard and I noticed it had suddenly lost power. The exhaust smelled more gassy, so I replaced the the fuel filter and the plugs. It still starts and runs good untill I am in gear and turn on the blades, then it losses some power. Any advice would be great. I also checked the air cleaner and it was good.

What engine model number, and your tractor model numbers would help as well.

kohler engine model#CV22S-67527 and the tractor is: 917.258904

I also just checked the spark and only had one cylinder sparking. So I guess I need to look for a coil.

I'm not really very familiar with the Kohler's but the following list should get you started. Someone more familiar with Kohler engines will be along shortly. Based solely on the "gassy" smell, I'd say she is running rich and it's an air related mixture problem. But since your only getting spark on one side, that pretty much narrows down the culprits.

LOSS OF POWER

Causes:

1. Cutting too much grass too fast
2. Throttle in "CHOKE" position
3. Build-up of grass, leaves and trash under mower
4. Dirty air filter
5. Low oil level/dirty oil
6. Faulty spark plug
7. Dirty fuel filter
8. Stale or dirty fuel
9. Water in fuel
10. Spark plug wire loose
11. Dirty engine air screen/lines
12. Dirty/clogged muffler
13. Loose or damaged wiring
14. Carburetor out of adjustment
15. Engine valves out of adjustment

Possible Solutions:

1. Set in "Higher Cut" position/reduce speed
2. Adjust throttle control
3. Clean underside of mower housing
4. Clean / replace air filter
5. Check oil level/change oil
6. Clean and re-gap or change spark plug
7. Replace fuel filter
8. Drain fuel tank and refill with fresh gasoline
9. Drain fuel tank and carburetor, refill tank with fresh gasoline and replace fuel filter
10. Connect and tighten spark plug wire
11. Clean engine air screen/fins
12. Clean/replace muffler
13. Check all wiring
14. See "To Adjust Carburetor" in Service Adjustments section
15. Contact an authorized service center/department

Sounds like it ate a coil...try swapping coils and see if the problem follows the coil, or if it stays on that cylinder.

Also 2 new plugs.

Check the cylinder compression. It sounds like you blew the head gasket.

It is for sure the coil. I swapped it around and didn't spark. Who on the forum is good to get parts from?

The breakdown only shows a single coil with a single lead, so id assume that that one coil can be used on either side...

Ended up getting the coils at Napa for $28 a piece. They came in factory Kohler boxes. She is back up and running. Thanks everyone for your help.
