hello again,

hoping that someone can give me advice on a kohler magnum 20 hp split case motor.I was advised by 1 person that this was a bad engine, but he said the heads were actuallt cast onto the cylinders. My brother picked 1 up yesterday for his 446,but it has removable heads.Does anyone know anything about these engines? any insight and advise would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

I have zero experience with that engine but you can get service and operator manuals for free at http://www.Kohler.com .

There are also a some groups on Yahoo that specialize in Kohler engines

The engine you are referring to was not used in the Case or Ingersoll tractors. As such, you may be waiting a long time to get the info you are looking for on this forum.

As has been said, removable heads. One of Kohler's best. In my opinion, it could be argued it is better than the CH (Command) series that replaced it.

Leave it to me to always throw a monkey wrench into the mix, but this engine was used in the Massey Ferguson Ingersolls.

I do have one but I can't help you much as it hasn't given me any issues as of yet.

Kohler Mag twins are relative to KT series twins. They have removable heads and the cylinders unbolt from the block as well. These engines are very similar to VW flat four aircooleds and BMW boxer twins in relative construction.

I've heard nothing but nightmare stories about owners of series one KT's where the engine was part splash lube and part pressure lube. Usually broken rods are the end resut. As for later KT's and Mag's; The crank seals run the chance of leaks moreso than other engine types I've worked with. The cylinder cooling fins can load up with gunk, if left unremedied, and fry the pistons and cylinder walls. That being said; It's not a failing with every engine... but it's something to keep an eye on.

"One of Kohler's best."

Can't say about the 20 hp but I have been a lawn mower trader for nearly 60. The Kohler Magnum 16 was the best starting, smoothest running engine I ever had.

thank you all for the replies.I do believe that the guy who gave me the info must have been mistaken.Aside from the split case, the engine does not resemble what he described. My brother picked up the engine and will be installing it next week after he gets the special lovejoy he ordered for the 1 7/16 shaft.I will update after it is running.thanks again.
