This is a Spec # 24548 which came on my Gravely 18-H aka Ariens GT18 in 1992. I estimate about 1400 hours on this engine (hourmeter broke in first couple years).

Was checking out my electric clutch this morning and freaked when I saw how much end play I had. When I applied voltage to the clutch, you could easily see the horizontal shaft moving in/out. I measure about .025 vs a spec of .002/.014.

Looks like a major tear down to fix this. Can I take out this much end play with shims?

This engine starts and runs great. Compression is 100/105 psi. It does have a metallic sounding knock which I suspect is the excessive end play.

I would appreciate any and all advice of what I should do. Thanks.
