Fuel pump was bad. replaced it. rebuilt the carb.. Installed a new pickup coil at the flywheel. used a business card to set the gap. have strong spark at the plug. have fuel to the carb.. Have a backfire at the exhaust. any reason it won't start. Tried either and that didn't work. It is getting gas to the plug. I could always put in a new plug, Any thoughts?

Is this a new-to-you engine, or was it running fine before the fuel pump went bad?

You could check that you are getting good compression.
It's also possible the spark plug is bad, in that it doesn't spark when under compression, so you could try a new plug.
