Kohler CV14 rocker arm

I was pulling a cart full of Christmas decorations to the outbuilding this morning. The engine started sounding a little louder, then after about 30 more feet it gradually lost RPM and died. I had spark, gas in the tank but still nothing. I took the plug out to make sure it was firing and checked the compression (90lb) but it still wouldn't fire and starter seemed to be spinning it to fast. I didn't think anything could be wrong with the valves because it had compression but decided to remove the valve cover anyway. I found the intake rocker off the push rod and the bolt that holds the rocker loose. I've got several of these Kohler singles and have never had this happen before. The red RTV makes me think this might be a recurring problem. Advice?

Is/was the bolt holding the rocker down still nice and tight? If so, and the pushrod is still nice and straight, then next I would check out the lifter (maybe it's collapsed), or the spring for the valve has weakened/failed.
I bet someone tried to adjust the valves.
dave_r, Both bolts were loose, the bottom one was just not loose enough for the rocker to come off.
Dave Wells, I hadn't thought of that but someone may have thought they were adjustable.
I found the torque spec (100 in lb). I think I'll torque them down and see what happens. Thanks

Crank the engine over by hand after and make sure the valve isn't sticking.

You might consider putting a bit of medium loctite on the bolt as well, to help with keeping the bolt in.

I know for one of my engines (a Kawasaki FR651V, solid lifters, so the valves need adjusting), the bolt that holds the rocker adjustment bracket in place is supposed to have it (which the idiots at the shop I bought it from, and took it back for warranty repair didn't put on when they reassembled it, so it backed out after 6 months).

Weeeelllllll ... You know that you have not had the problem with the multiple CV's you have had come to hand and passed on, so it likely is not a common problem.
Loose fasteners are likely a previous owner/operator trying some maintenance and not checking the factory manual for torque settings, and possibly suggested use of thread locking compound. Gotta go with the dab of Loctite and a re-assemble torqued to spec.
I would pull the pushrods and roll them across something flat just to make sure they have not gotten bowed by some off-kilter force. If bent, your choice as to replace or attempt to straighten.

Last night I took the rockers off and screwed the bolts in by hand to check the threads, both seemed good. Since the threads seemed OK I decided not to use Lock Tight. I set the torque wrench to 10 ft lb which I think is about 1 1/2 lb to much and tightened the screws. I turned it through by hand then engaged the starter for a few seconds. Everything looked good so this morning I fought an old tube of Ultra Black RTV for enough sealer to put the valve cover back on. It cranked right up and ran fine. If they loosen up again I'll put some Lock Tight on them. This is one of the $50 mowers I bought in the spring without a deck. I've been using it to pull a cart around this winter . $50 mowers are "Like a Box of Chocolates " you never know what you'll find. Sadly these mowers are not worth much around here. Thanks

That one is in nice shape. Too bad you live so far away, I have a deck for it.
Cannon, if nothing else the engines are good replacements for some newer 'improved' models. And you may have enough good parts from 3-4 to cobble together one good one. It keeps you away from bars and other things... or so it seems. My wife does not complain a lot about the 'stuff' I seem to drag home cuz she knows where to find me almost round the clock. I try to minimize the numbers and have been 'good' so far for close to a year. I think my mind is on the prowl for something else to fiddle with. Take care.
