I have a Kohler Command CV-18s. it has 244 hours. It is attached to a New Holland LS45. The problem:
for years, I have lived with the fact that when I turn the key to start the tractor, the starter will "Click". I will turn the key again and the starter will "click". This process will go on about 5 times and finally the starter will fully engage and start the engine.
Now recently all I get is the click. no mater how many times I turn the key.. it's the turn key - click, turn key - click routine over and over. I'm thinking my starter has finally gone.
1. the battery is brand new and fully charged.
2. the wire connections (battery and starter) seem tight and clean.
3. What other troubleshooting should I do before spend dough for a new starter.
4. Is changing out the starter difficult. (this tractor is a derivitive of a Toro).
Thanks,
Tom

Here is what I have ran into ALOT with starters. Your not getting enough switch current. The switch wire will always light the test light up and make the sol click so you have voltage. BUT it donesn't quite have the current to pull in all the way. Sometimes you will loose some current through switches, ign switch, safety switches.
HOW TO FIX IT!! We call it a helper sol, or a starter relay. Take a good heavy duty relay (30-50amp rated)( a ford starter sol will also work but they are pretty big to work with) and connect the power lead No30 to the battery wire at the starter. The other terminal No87 needs to go to the switch wire on the starter. And the Orginal switch wire goes to the coil on the relay No86. The other coil terminal No85 goes to ground.
This will give you full current to the sol and should work for you. Cheap fix I have done to dozens of Tractor lawn mowers cars and trucks.
I hope this will help. :trink40:

Here is a thread devoted to the "Starter Assist" relay. If you need a copy of the schematic and a Word file with instructions, PM or Email me with your e-mail address. Good Luck.
