Heres photo of a kohler I thinking about getting and been told it is a good motor [command?] But the number is off the side cover and came out a crasftman and says has 172 hours on it but not sure if it is good to get? I read where they put both type engines in there tractors?

Need it in a deere for 54inch deck----Any thoughts?

Should have posted a side view. Looks like a Kohler Command from above, position and shape of air cleaner, next to toes, shape of cooling shroud, position of starter, oil fill tube, looks like voltage regulator on left rear corner. Should be an excellent engine, but not new, low hours though. .

FWIW, I have a 26HP Briggs on a 50" deck, and a 26HP Kohler on a 54" deck. 18HP seems a little light. However, we all know what HP decals on small engines mean. Something to consider is whether your 54" deck is mulching or hi-lift as those seem to need more HP to make them happy.

I've wondered about these Harbor Freight engines. I have a couple of the horizontal shaft and am very pleased with them.

the Command is a good engine.. the Courage is the one that ''''takes courage to own one''''

the Command has HYD lifters in it,, thus there is no valves to adjust..

I have a Saber with a 42 inch deck.. it has a 12.5 HP Command in it..

I'm pretty sure that's a Command. Look for a sticker on the side that gives the cc's, it should be 490. I put one of those on a Husqvarna with a 48 inch deck and it does ok but I wouldn't try it on a 54. Husqvarna thread https://www.mytractorforum.com/64-husqvarna-dixon/1141378-bought-yth24k48-parts-repair.html.

What I was going by was the torque on the V-twin briggs 18hp which is 29--30ft. pounds abd this is rated at 29 so since deere puts 54 on those thought it be ok?

You would be loosing some displacement 490cc vs 570cc on the vanguard. The Command singles are nice engines, if you get it let us know how it works. You would need a fuel pump on a GT235, if that engine doesn't have one you could rig one up. Would need a muffler, either custom or one from a GT225 might work.

I put a head on a LT150 with a repowered Command that did not have a mechanical fuel pump. They used an electric. Was a nice setup with a regulator set to zero.

To my surprise worked great. Guy that has it now says it fires up like a car. Wished I’d taken a few pictures and wrote part numbers down.

Depends how engine is made--you cant take a 400hp V8 out of a camaro and put in truck and pull 80,000lbs BUT a 400HP Cummins with 2,200 foot pounds torque will --those kohlers are made little different so get same torque as vtwin briggs with less cc --BUT it still may be pushing it for 54inch deck we will see??

u may have to lower ur travel speed to make it work.. the pic u posted was a Command.. now the twin cyl has a bigger crank.. the 22 HP command has that..(1 1/8).. the 20 HP will b the same size.. (1 inch)..

I do have a 20 HP spare.. come & git it.. it has a muffler on it too..

Well I will tell you how stupid I,ve been--All this looking for an engine and I have one right here,,I have two Gt235 one blowed motor and one engine caught fire burnt engine on side so am taking all parts from blowed one to fix up other [only 300 hours on it] and this farmer I know wants the other and I sold him a troy-built last summer with 23hp kohler Command low hours 1inch shaft SO he would have had to pay me to do all work and spend $ for engine for his GT so gave him the briggs and I,ll use the kohler and not charge him anything comes out same as before and I sold the Troy for him 5 to650 now and I just sold the rest of troy-built for 200---I,m keeping the bigger engine cause going to run a blower on it and I move other lawns too ,, Both have 54inch decks and are very nice tractors one was dealer trade in paid 400 for it other burnt one paid 50 for it, Everybody will be happy now ---no more stupid pills for me,,lol!!

many such attempts have a sad story and are not made public. The ones made public were lucky, and probably understated the effort. Pulley OD, Groove width, crank diameter, keyway size, length, mating pulley for deck drive. Engine bolt mount dimensions, Wiring changes. clearances. engine condition. And on this specific engine, without numbers, parts lookup is a guess ( sometimes the numbers on the carb will help back into engine numbers ).
