Knocking issue 48 8N

5114 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  tucktuck69
I recently started hearing a knock on the #4 cylinder. I don't know if its a valve or a piston issue. The oil pressure never seems to change from about 45 psi hot or cold.

Any suggestions on what to look at listen for? I have never had to trouble shoot a combustion engine other than basics and a carb teardown and clean.

Would it be best to do a full rebuild?

Thanks

Can you describe the knock, does it sound like heavy metals hitting or is it more of a tinny light sounding knock? Also take a piece of broom handle and hold one end to your ear and hold the other to various parts of the engine believe it or not that will help you locate the position of the noise. Identify where the noise is coming from low or high in the engine.
I tried several times to hear the knock with a broom handle and scope. I didn't hear it that way.

I do however hear it at the top of the block/bottom of the head. Right behind the intake/exhaust manifold.

Sorry for the delayed reply AT&T has had several network issues in our area.

Oh and the know and exhaust sputter I have coincide with one another.

Thanks
Is it possible that you are hearing and exhaust leak at the #4 cylinder which is a common problem on these old Ford engines?

Yeah, I know all about the ATT problems, I was talking with one of my old work mates yesterday who told me somebody in Nashville screwed up. it is a safe bet that as soon as they can assign blame that person or persons will be looking for employment.
I do know as soon as I heard it I lost power. It may just need the head rebuild. Or can you adjust the springs?
Back when I dealt with AT&T for data lines, no matter where in the country the problem was, they always said "some backhoe operator in New Jersey accidentally hit one of our fiber cables when they were digging". I could never figure out how a T-1 line from Los Angeles to San Francisco had to make it's way to New Jersey and back to get there.

You have no idea how crazy the layout of the fiber rings can be, for this part of the country (Kentucky, Indiana, etc) they, T1's and T3's originate and connect to the rest of the world in Nashville. While it is possible for a backhoe to cut one nine times out of ten the trouble will be somebody screwed up something in a multiplexer and everything done to them is done remotely other than changing out a physical part of course. When I left they were moving our support to some place in California so most of the time people working on them have never laid eyes on one.

There is nothing to the head to rebuild it is a flat chunk of iron, I would suggest that is you can hear the knock with it at idle try pulling one spark plug wire off at a time to see if you can hear a change in the tone of the knock. At least then you will know what cylinder is the problem. Another thing is drain the oil and screen it to see if there are any bits of metal or foreign material in it and report back

Without hearing the knock in person it is hard to diagnose, it could be a rod bearing, piston or something else entirely.
I will try to check in the next few days. Work has been crazy and trying to keep up at home.

Thanks again.
I recently purchased a 1950 8N. After I got it running, I decided to clean it up and pressure washed it. After I was done. I started it and noticed a knock on the number 4 cylinder. I know it was number 4 because it completely stopped when I pulled the plug wire. I did notice a leak in the manifold on number 4. Probably blew it out with the pressure washer. Any ideas
