Today was the awesome! Been working with a guy about his HT20 with a Brantly Backhoe and a Johnson 14 loader. Finally we came to a deal and myself and my older brother went to pickup today! It was about a 3 hour haul, left at 8am and got home at 3pm. We split the cost, the backhoe is mine, the loader is his, and the tractor is half and half. The backhoe will be mounted on my HT23 with the Johnson loader. The loader will be mounted on one of the other HT23s. I am still in shock! The backhoe is in amazing condition, no leaks and has the original pump that mounts on the front PTO. The tractor we got it on is in pretty good shape, expect it needs a hydro pump, but the motor still runs great! The backhoe works amazing! The pistons will most likely need rebuilding down the line on the front end loader, but that loader also works great! The backhoe we have already taken off the tractor. We towed the HT20 off the trailer with my HT23 and took it off in the garage. It surprisingly came off extremely easy, all quick disconnect hoses for the pump and four simple hitch pins. I definitely do not need my 3 point hitch anymore, but calm down, it is NOT for sale. It will be tucked in the basement for another day. I think the backhoe is the more rare of them with the outriggers that fold out instead of pressing straight down, but am not sure. We think the tractor is from a cementary for digging the graves, a little spooky but don't mind. You definitely do not find these everyday. I have two questions before I remount it on the HT23, what type of fluid should I use in the backhoe? Normal 10W-30 hydraulic oil I use in my Johnson? Also before I mount the backhoe I would like to do a tranny fluid change, what do you suggest for this? My brother used John Deere Hy Gard fluid in his when he changed his filter. The fluid in mine is brown right now. I want the best fluid because this HT23 is my BABY! Also I would like to get a manual for this model Brantly, if anyone had a PDF or copy of one I would definitely would be interested.

Nice find, be interesting to see how this evolves.

A note on proper operation of backhoe, always put stress from backhoe, into the two feet. Never let the stress transfer to the HT's rear transaxle, rocking it back and forth, it will shear gears in the transaxle if engaged and forced to move. Put feet down, then move two speed rear to neutral position, so if it does move the HT, there is no stress going into the rear.

Seen a case skid steer, have both it's pin wheel locks (bar up)= wheel locks, sheared from the machine due to poor operator knowledge of stress transfer to machine by backhoe attachment.

Put all stress on feet, not tractor, check that 20 for massive rear play, not sure if the rear turning the hydro back would destroy the hydro??

By the way,see you towed it with a real truck LOL
Thnkas, that is my brother's 2003 Cummins, pretty rare because it is a 3500 single wheel, not dually. Mass is a pain with duallies.

This is such a great tip, once I get it mounted on my HT23 I will be sure to do this. Do you know how much these backhoes weigh? I was pretty nervous putting it on my HT23, but then agian I am not the average consumer so it will be babied once on there.

Does anyone know what fluid should I use in my HT23 transmission? also does anyone out there have a manual PDF of this backhoe? Is it in the library?

That backhoe looks to be in nice shape. Take good care of it and operate it as it should and it will not break your tractor.

I would think it is around 500lb, then came to mind, how do you counter weight that? then it struck me. It is counter weighted by your Jonson loader on the front, if I recall correctly from my backhoe days to set up position use the loader in the front to jack the front wheels off the ground 2-3 inches. Then use the feet to jack the rear wheels off the ground 2-3 inches, this takes all the stress off anything mechanical or gear related giving you a 3 point, point of contact with the ground. Then the stress only goes through the frame rails. Keep an eye on the feet cylinders to see if the seals hold it up, or if it creeps back down to the ground.

You may want to see if you can find a smaller bucket to concentrate your energy more,(like a 10 inch 4 tooth) that looks like a sand bucket that would be used in soft soil, say, like North Carolina.

What is NH soil like up there?
