Just Bought my first rider JD X300!!! Need some advice!

Just picked up an x300 today at an auction, will have pics tomorrow. Just like new!! 25hrs!

One question, what kind of oil do you guys run in your riders. This one has a 17hp Kawasaki. Can I run a full synthetic motor oil (10-40) in this mower safely? I was thinking of running some Valvoline or some other popular brand synthetic.

Another question, where do you guys get your oil filters and air filters? Do you go to the dealer or another place?

THANKS!!

Congratulations on the new tractor. Yes you can run synthetic with no problem. Take your filter numbers to an auto parts store and see if you can cross them to Wix.
I use John Deere's oil 10w30 turf gaurd in my X320 and LX277 and I use there filters.Im just funny that way.I never did worry about saving a few dollars on a oil filter that gets changed 1 or 2 times a year.I know that just because a filter looks the same it can be different.Im not going to take someones word for it that it will work.Thats just me.As for oil im just not a synthetic kind of guy.The filter still has to be changed because synthetic gets dirty also.So if I have to change the filter I might as well drain the oil.Again that just me.

You are not alone! I am the same way and I always have been. Best of luck with the new mower 1lawnboy.

I have just been using the JD branded oil and filters. I have waited until the maintenance kit goes on sale and just buy that way.
I would recommend getting the owner's manual from JD and following the recommedations within to prolong the life of your great deal.
get the manual for sure.

i would go ahead and change the oil and filter since you do not know the previous maintenance history. but after tha tthe oil/oilfilter are good for up to 100 hours or 1x per year whichever is first.
1lawnboy,

Great find.
As others have said if you don't change your oil and filters but once or twice a year, I would stick with the JD stuff.

If you are going to be doing it more often, as I do, you can find aftermarket filters at just about any auto parts supplier or big box store.

As for what type oil I stick with a 10w30.

Thanks for all the input. I mowed with it today, everything is perfect!! I washed it and waxed it when I was done. I do have the owners manual, it came with it at the auction, I was suprised. To my luck, the battery was dead at the auction so no one knew if it ran or not. After looking at the owners other things, I was convinced that it was nothing serious. Everything he had was maticulous.

These were after a wash and a wax'n. One thing I did not like was that some water got into the headlight housing. Is there a way to get in there without messing anything up?

I gave $1950 for it, do you think that as fair? Did not have to do anything to it, just recharged the battery. Even had a full tank of gas in it. I have the reciept from the orig owner, he bought it in April of 08. He paid $3200 after taxes. It has 25 hours on it.

Sounds like a good deal in my book...:thThumbsU
Do they make gator blades for this deck? Its a 42" Edge Mulch Cutting system.

If you know off the top of your head, what are the part numbers?
Sounds like you got a excellent deal. 25 hours is nothing for that machine.
I'n sure there are some gator blades for it....best place to find JD stuff is at the dealer or some of the site sponsers...

:ditto: on the Wix filters. I think this motor uses a JD AM107423 filter, which cross references to a Wix 51394. The NAPA Gold filter (FIL 1394) is also manufactured by Wix and would serve you well.

I went to the dealer today and bought 2 quarts of turf gaurd and a filter. It was $15 bucks. Not too bad. I dont think Ill have to do anything else to it this year. Next year, Ill probably take it to the dealer and do a full service. Blades, leveling, fluids, greasing, the whole works. I think the most Ill put on it in a full mowing season will be 50-75hrs. I dont have much to mow, wish I did now!

I like the idea of hooking the garden hose up to the deck, that eleminates a lot of headache when cleaning.

If your original blade has M154061 stamped on it and I'm pretty sure it will. You will need a 96-356 gator blade.

1. Save $150 bucks and DIY w/ the DIY Kit.
2. They don't work good at all. It will rust up the deck.

The WIX filters, also sold as NAPA Gold filters are some of the best filters you can buy. Do a search online and you will find several comparison tests with OEM type filters in the auto industry. They are not Fram quailty at all. They have more and better filter media, better bypass systems etc. The good thing is that they are competitively priced and widely available.
