I love working on lawn and garden tractors. After work, with a beer I'm going in my garage and do something on one of my 15 (yes 15!) tractors. I buy them cheap, repair them (or not), and sell them on the side of the road here and FB Marketplace. Sometimes I have scrap metal that needs to go and to the junkyard I go, I have a friend who text message me pictures of "new arrivals" and I tell him yes or no if I want it or not. He keeps it aside for me to pick it up. I pay for the weight of it. People scrap some nice things and of course most of them are good for parts only.

Here some examples of what I got from past weeks. The Columbia the engine was seized up. I "unseized" it with a ratchet, filled the crankcase with oil, filled the fuel tank and it strated right up! Did nothing on it, and I mow 2 hours a week with it, not burning oil. Cost: 35 canadian dollars. :tango_face_grin:

The yardman I needed the transaxle, its a Peerless 2300 series, the engine runs but it is dying, 100 psi on 1 cylinder, 75 on the second but for the parts its worth the 50 canadian dollars. I think I'll keep it for a winter project, I have a 18HP Twin II pressure-lubed engine for it and a mower deck. Those transaxles are like a Abrams tank :tango_face_grin:

Do you have in your region nice finds in scrap yards for a fraction of the price you would pay on FB marketplace or craigslist?

Years ago I had a scrap yard nearby who would put stuff like this aside and sell it cheap rather than just crush it,I bought a few tons worth of tractors, parts, engines, etc from them--made some good spare cash selling them when fixed up,or had good running tractors to keep and use myself..--but more than 10 years ago someone "picking" got hurt, sued them, and their insurance regulations now prohibit anyone beyond the gates and NO "picking" or parts scavenging is allowed, they no longer hold anything aside either..

Few salvage or scrap yards will let you go poking around or pull parts yourself now,it stinks..the few older places that will let you nose around either have nothing worth buying,or want an outrageous price for it if it is salvageable..most places now crush things as soon as it gets dumped out of a truck with an excavator .:(

I saw a nice two cylinder Wisconsin on an old Lincoln welder that looked pretty nice, but they wanted $200 for it "as-is"..a Gravely 4 wheeled tractor next to it with a hopelessly seized up Kohler twin in the rear ,with no spark plugs and cylinders full of muddy water, was "not for sale" unless you had $500..no thanks, not when the transmission might well be just as bad...it was complete though, with a deck and plow blade, but I wasn't interested in it at that price..$100 I might have been..

I’m usually not lucky enough to pick stuff up at the scrap yard but I do have a guy that picks up my scrap and he brings me whatever tractors he ends up with. Some I’m able to flip and others are good for parts. When I sell a machine I am usually willing to take their old machine on trade as well. I end up with a lot of inexpensive inventory that way. Most people around here just want something to cut their grass, so I end up with mostly lawn tractors which is fine because they easier to flip. The most common is the craftsman LT1000, I have resurrected 12 or 13 of those this year the easiest of which just had the plug come off the seat switch. I wish they were all that easy.
