Is there any reason to go to the dealer and buy John Deere oil versus using plain old automobile 10W30? Any extra additives or anything in the John Deere oil?

My opinion, oil is oil..........as long as it meets the standards

Make sure the oil meets the spec indicated in your owner's manual. Otherwise, it makes no difference which brand of oil you use.

Nope.

I use mobil 1 5w30 synthetic in mine. "Oddly" enough ever since I switched from regular to the synthetic mobil 1 the engine's been running much better and the oil comes out much cleaner than it did before.

I guess my gt275 <3 mobil 1, heh.

for the engine, get something off the shelf that meets the specs. for the tranny on serviceable units, i would go JD all the way just because it is so hard to find a suitable replacement.

That's a good point - when I changed my hydrostatic oil I spent like 30seconds trying to figure out what type (ATF, gear oil, etc...) then just gave up and paid the premium for the JD Hy-guard stuff
