John Deere LA & D series Lawn Tractors. How many CCA do they REQUIRE from a battery

My 2007 LA110 had 300cca (cold cranking amps) from the factory batter and 360 Cranking amps.

John Deere wants $70 the same battery. Costco has 230cca /300CA for $39.

Regular car batteries won't fit.

Just wondered how much is the minimum or recommended for the Home Depot series of tractors like the LA and D series.

Anywhere else like Napa, AutoZone, etc. is probably going to be cheaper than the dealership. I'd find a 300cca battery & make sure the battery posts are on the correct side for your machine, can't tell you how many times I've seen people have to put their battery in the machine backwards or try to extend the battery cables to make a battery work.

My dealer LA 135 came with a 230 cca battery. Didn't last very long. What a B**CH to get out from where they built the tractor around it. Later today I'll check the amps required to crank it. I'm just not very bubbly at 5:30 am and need another cup of coffee, possibly 2 more. :ROF

Cheap batteries regardless of the CCA aren't worth the trouble. They don't last last as long, and they aren't sealed very well. I've found that they get corrosion on the terminals a lot more than a quality battery.

1st battery in my Poulan lasted 6 yrs with no corrosion. Bought one of those cheep wally batteries to replace it, and it's been nothing but corrosion city ever since. Price be damned, my next one will be an Interstate.

is this the original battery? if so then you got 6 years out of a 70.00 battery, and will do good to get 3 years out a 40.00 battery.

as to your question, a 230-260 CCA battery will crank it just fine. BUT will die quicker if for some reason your machine does not fire up. the higher the CCA the more instantaneous power but also more reserve for multiple start attempts. But IIRC most starters draw in the 60-90A range so any of the listed batteries will crank it.

The meter is a little erratic between compression and non compression in the rotation but it looks like @ 60°F 150 amps non compression and 225 amps at the top of compression for each cylinder.

You need higher CCA if you have a snowblower for winter 350 min. But my X520 is higher.
If just for lawn mowing the lower one is fine. Your old battery is worth core $$$'s

I would agree with other posters, don't cheap out on a new battery. My 2004 GX345 still has the original battery. I never had any problems and no corrosion with it.

Mach-1 ....before I was even done reading your post , I had the exact same thought as what you wrote below. That I might just get a Interstate Battery.

P.S. my dad had a White and Black 1972 Mach 1 Mustang with a Boss Cleveland engine.

I would go for the lowest possible CCA without getting into a cheap battery. I have a 300 CCA Exide battery in my diesel, and it turned over fine and started in 20* weather. Exide makes batteries for Deere, with an extra set of "leads" in it (according to the parts counter guy) to make about 420 CCA. Have on in my older Deere. Never had a problem starting it, even though the charging system is completely shot.

I looked in the Interstate's website, looks like one of their batts is about 75 bucks.

SWEET!! The '71-'73 Mach1's are my favorites. I fell in love with them when when I was a teenager. I tried to get a Mach1 for myself two times. My Dad, being the professional haggler that he thinks he is, blew both car deals for me. :( My dream ride is a '73 Mach1!! Maybe someday...

I tend to go the other way, more cranking amps to deal with colder temperatures. These little engines seem to need more battery if the temp goes below 40*F.

A good battery is going to cost. Bite the bullet.

If you find two batteries with the same CCA rating, always go for the heavier one; it has more lead in the plates and will last longer.
