I just got a John Deere L110 with a Kohler command 17.5 (ps-27509) for free from my neighbor. The motor was supposed to be good, but it sat for a couple of years. Today, I got it cleaned up and fired it up. However, smoke billowed out of the exhaust and I ran it for about 2 minutes. When I shut it off, Oil ran out of the muffler and made about a 6" puddle under the mower. At first I thought it was from the valve cover, but after double checking, it came out of the muffler.

I pulled the plug and expected it to be a oily mess, but it was dry. Also now, it will not start. Instead of the intake creating a vacuum, it is now pulsing in and out through the carburetor.

I am pretty good with a wrench and do have a service manual for the mower, but I hate re-inventing the wheel. Hopefully one of you fine folks can point me in the direction that I need to take.

It has hydraulic lifters, so there is no valve adjustment. Oil level is actually on the low side.

I don't know that much about these engines, but I have built quite a few auto, dirt bike, and dune buggy engines and I have never seen oil run out of an exhaust on a motor that ran.

May be I have two different problems, both of them relating to sitting.

One of the things I am thinking about, is maybe the rings stuck from sitting. Then I have a lot of blow by that is forcing oil past the rings and into the cylinder.

The other is the intake valve issue. As DT mentioned, the pulse through the carb does act like an intake valve that is not closing. Maybe the hydraulic lifters gummed up and are not bleeding down correctly once they got oil pressure.

Just trying to make sense of it before I start the tear down.
