John Deere JX 75 Transmission

Good morning folks,
I'm looking for help to see if I need a new transmission(which would mean time for a new mower) or is there a fix. The mower no longer self propels. When I put it on blocks the wheels turn at different speeds through the gears, but on the ground it doesn't get any power to drive. I have not replaced the belt. It doesn't seem to be slipping.

The fact that it changes gears with no load leads me to think the transmission might be okay. I did check the lever on the transmission that engages the wheels it that is moving well.

Any help would be appreciated. I am real happy with this mower and have had it for about 12 years. The Kawasaki engine runs great. I'm hoping this isn't the end because a new tranny runs at $400. The weight of this mower makes pushing it very difficult and a lot harder than I want to deal with at this point in my life.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Chris, first I would check the keys on the pulley shafts (# 4 and # 16). I've seen those shear after time albiet on my Craftsman self-propelled.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will check that out. From what I described. Would a bad tranny give me those symptoms? Thanks
It could, but so could a sheared key, we always try to check the cheaper solutions first!
The problem was the shaft key. It was missing completely so the pully wasn't engaging the shaft and it just spun. Thank you very much for the help.

Good deal! Glad to hear it was a cheap fix!
