Bumper. What, exactly, are you supposed to be able to "bump" with a fragile piece of plastic? This is on the LX178. Has anyone overcome this design?

Its sad, John Deere wants to suck every last dime out of our pockets, I wouldent mind paying for the extra if it was quality stuff but its like John deere has given up on making quality and is only focused on that last dime in my wallet.

Great answers so far. On this particular unit, they've made it difficult to design a real bumper that doesn't require you to remove theirs. I'll be working on this one and, hopefully, be able to report my findings. I never want to have to replace any of the original front end parts due to their cost!

Probabably named bumper as it's in the front of the hood. Has to have some kind of "one word" name in the parts system. Like "panel", etc.

JD did make an actual metal bumper for that if you like hitting stuff. Got one on your car?

Actually, I do still have one car with bumpers. But even the new ones are somewhat flexible material that won't fall totally apart with a slight impact.
The brittle plastic on the LX, I'm certain, will not take the slightest "bump".

All cars still have bumpers, they are just enclosed in plastic bumper covers that are consider sacrificial. Folks (meaning we) decided we no longer liked chrome bumpers and thus the composite/plastic bumper covers on a car appeared.

Now with JD, they just make delicate plastic parts. My only guess is that it's cheaper for them to do that than making the old steel panels like on my 400(minus the hood) otherwise I am not sure why they went to composite vs stamped steel panels. I wouldn't have thought the buying public asked for plastic but who knows. Does JD even consider their customer's preferences when designing garden tractors? The plastic does save on the rust so there is one positive to having plastic. I would rather have the metal panels though.

If the manufacturers wanted us to drive our tractors sober, they wouldn't include a cup holder. :trink40::trink39::trink40::trink39:

I believe the X-series are improved with respect to the hood/bumper interface. I've had customers who simply opened their LX series hood and it would shatter into pieces. Definetly need to use a better more flexible plastic, or better yet steel. Ever since the 1963 110 JD was hard headed about having composite hoods and they surely won't change now.

What you have there is a very highly expensive piece of plastic. Not good for anything, except to look at... And you have to be very careful when looking at this green monster as it will crack. Get you one like mine, and you can chase a bulldozer down.

When I get some spare time and warm weather, I'm going to have to fabricate one like this.

JD used composites since '63 (fiberglass then Xenoy) as it holds down sound, doesn't rust, and won't vibrate/rattle. Plus it could be formed in a more stylized fashion. Xenoy costs more than steel, and I've seen that stated several times in terms of car body panels (BMW has used it).

After those first LX's JD went away from making the hinges part of the body panels themselves.

I used an ATV bumper that I bought off Ebay for my 317 "Special"! I think I used a 1/4" spacer on each side to fit the 317 frame. Cut a couple inches off each end of the tubes for a better look. ~~ grnspot
