i am part of the local volunteer fire department and they own a baseball complex that is continuing to grow in size. just this year we added another baseball field. Which brings us from 1 little league field and regulation size fields up to 3 regulation fields and little league with the possibility of another field in the coming years. Lets just say the we are needing some more equipment. Right now we have is a very tired 850 john deere. We don't quite make enough money to purchase brand new. But one of the local dealers is going to be having an auction that has a 955 John Deere with 624 hours on the 3 cyl yanmar. It has a 72" midmount deck. With a rear pto that is running the midmount? it looks like it has the mounts for a 3pt but there aren't any lft arms. Its actually in pretty good shape. So i guess what i am trying to say. What do you guys think of this tractor? Anyone know anything else about them?

The 955 is a follow-up model to the 950. And the 850 is a step down from the 950 so basically it's a newer step-up no frills, mower. Very nice and reliable, but the 50, and 55 series are standard shift I believe and are really nice. I say all of this because I'm 99% sure it's all correct but I could be wrong. Good Luck

Basically, the way if I remember correctly, the 55 series were just the 50 series with the hydrostatic transmission.

The 955 is a 4WD hydrostatic tractor with hi/lo range transfer case. The 3 cylinder diesel Yanmar is rated at 34hp at the crank, 27hp at the PTO. It has an 1100RPM belly PTO to run the MMM, and a 540RPM PTO on the back for the three point. I am sure the lift arms were taken off if this machine was a dedicated mower. The rockshafts have an adjustable stop and a variable drop rate.

624 hours is VERY low. It sounds like it would be an excellent unit for your field needs, and perhaps could pull a larger rear mower or a self powered side cutter in addition to the belly mower.

The 55 series and the 50/70 series tractors are very different tractors. As pointed out, the hydro vs. gear is front & center. However, there are other differences, including sizes, and attachments. The 55 series paved the road for the 41xx tractors and now the 2x20 series. These tractors are considered some of the best iron from Deere, though they are getting up in age now. They also make their power at higher RPMs than today's machines, so some argue there was more wear. Anyway, maintenance is everything. If you can get the history, it is worth more. :)
