John Deere 850 3pt lift control question.

My dad just bought a 1984 JD 850 (Yanmar) and the lift control for the hitch it pretty weird compared to other tractors I've been on.

The lever is spring loaded and the hydraulics act like there are pre set positions to automatically go to... For instance, moving the lever all the way rearward will raise the implement. Pushing forward against the spring tension will lower the implement, but if I let go of the lever it will raise up again.

I'm used to operating tractors where the lever is not spring loaded and the implement stays put when you let go of the lever.

I don't have a manual for this tractor. Can someone please school me on how the hydraulic control is supposed to work on these Yanmar/Deere's?

Also, on top of the hydraulic assembly just beneath the seat there is a tiny orange lever which appears to be some sort of valve... could someone please explain all this to me?

The tiny orange lever will control the rate of drop for the 3ph. If you have a heavy 3ph attachment you can adjust it for how fast it will lower not just slam down to the ground.

The control lever should have a friction disk at the pivot point, there should be a nut and bolt type of adjustment.
my 655, when i raise it when its cold right when first started will spring back down half way then its fine. also if tractor is off and cold and i raise the lever i noticed it springs back also. but i have no issues using after about a minute of warm up.

There's a big knob just forward of the orange lever that I was told adjusted the rate of fall... ?

I'll have to play with it some more, but it seems like it will only stay in two positions, all the way down and all the way up.

The big knob under the seat is the hydraulic stop valve. Its only used to lock the rockshaft. This photo is from my factory John Deer Service manual.

I have an update on the lift problem. I know it is a problem now and not just operator error.

The lift will only start going up when the lever is almost all the way back... the rest of the levers range does nothing. Also if the lift is up, merely moving the lever forward just a hair will cause it to drop all the way down without stopping.

I think something to do with the control valve is stuck. The control lever pushes on a small piston that sticks out of the back of the valve assembly... I believe this piston is supposed to ride the lever all the way out but it does not, it only comes out about 3/8 of an inch which is why the lift doesn't work until the lever is almost all the way back.

My dad and I have been begging a local tractor mechanic for months to come look at it but he hasn't shown up yet.

Has anyone experienced this problem or would know how to fix it? I've been looking all over the internet but it seems like the 850 is really hard to find parts for.... I can find more parts for a Russian Belarus than for the Deere and that's sad.

There is a little lever behind the seat and just near the top of the right 3pt arm. This level actually "locks" the 3pt position. So, if your problem has not been solved yet, this can be a short term solution.

Yes, this is an older post from this year, but if anyone else has this issue this info can help some.
