jet star parts

I currently have a 1980 Allis Chalmers 5020 4x4 with Allied loader and parts are not easy to come by, so I am looking at purchasing another tractor for main use hopefully keeping the Allis for smaller jobs.

I found a MM jet star that has a good price and seems in good shape, but before looking to far into it I want to make sure parts are easy to find. Any help would be great. thanks, dt

hmm, that's not a good sign.
What parts are you looking for? If it's for say oil changes the filters are available through NAPA, ignition parts for gas may take more searching but are out there. The Minneapolis Moline website is a good place to look for info: www.minneapolis-moline.com Chuck

As a partsman, I found out that you need to buy something that a lot of other people own. M & M does not fit in that category. While the Jet Star was a nice tractor, unless you have several in your area, you will probably find it is similar to the AC 5020 in finding parts. The 5020 was manufactured FOR AC by another company.
Both parts, AC and M&M can be accessed via AGCO.com which will give you parts book info. AGCO has said they will support the antique owners. As for dealers for parts for either of those tractors are via Massey Ferguson dealers, now. AC, M&M, Oliver, Cockshutt, White, and Massey Ferguson are all under the AGCO group, now, in case you were not aware.

As far as buying something everyone else has, even JD has several models that "no one else" owns.......and try to get parts for them!!! There are lots of 8N Fords around. Parts are readily available for them because there were so many built. NO, I am not suggesting you buy one.
I would suggest, if you want AC, that you look at the WD, WD-45, D-15, D-17 area. Be forwarned, in my opinion, their 3 point hitch leaves some things to be desired, but it does go up and down. Lots of these tractors were built and parts are more available than for the two tractors you mentioned.

I love my 5020 (and yes I'm an Allis man), but was really looking for a tractor with live hydro's and live pto. a lot of the AC's got away with having a "live pto/hydro's" because of the hand clutch. I have been searching for over a year for a set of front rims for my 5020, found lots of them for a 2wd, but not the ones for the 4x4's.

I'm mainly interested in the common maintance and wear items. plugs, wires, distributer cap, rotor, ignition coil, etc. and parts such as water pumps.

Also if there are any week links in the machines.

I had a wd 45 for years and loved it, but sold it when we quit farming. (looks like I should have kept it now) It was a very reliable and hard working machine (It was converted to a 3pt hitch and I agree with the 3pt comment above, while it worked, it could have been better). thanks for the replies dt.

If these are your main concerns for the Jet Star, the ignition system on it should be a Delco Remy. Common to many other tractors, including the AC WD, so those parts are available at O'Reilly and others. O'Reilly does need original part numbers, but those are available, on line, via AGCO.com part book. The water pump is PROBABLY available via NAPA. I got two for my Olivers, years ago. Also, I was successful in helping another individual get a water pump for a Japanese tractor by simply Googling water pump rebuilders or some such.
Now that you know about other tractors that match the 5020, you might have more luck finding the wheels. I would measure the bolt hole circle diameter and look via that way. You might find that a common wheel might fit......Lots of front wheel assist tractors out, now, but the smaller ones are harder to find.

Always thought early Jet Stars were an odd-ball. Harder to find the tin good shape, has odd shapes in them. Hydraulics not so good till the later ones, which were improved many ways. The Gold color one, never liked the paint. I have owned Jet Star 3 and that is much more modern looking, improved in many ways and easier to get parts for. A U-302 is a little bigger, but about the same tractor. Even bigger is the M-670, a real nice all around sized tractor and more power, ease of use, etc. Easier to find parts for all the Square-hooded models from about 64' and up.
