Help, I have scoured the net looking for The input speed on a JD 46 inch single stage thrower. I have mounted it on my Badboy PUP ztr, I installed a 1 to 1 gear box to go from belt to shaft drive. My mower turns at 3500 rpm with a 6 inch pto. I put a 12 inch pulley on the gearbox to bring it down to 1750 rpms that is the speed I have going into the blower. It just seems to be too fast but am unsure what it should be. So if anybody knows what it should be I am all ears. Thanks

nairb35,

The 46 snow thrower (serial numbers MO1480xxxxxx thru MO1482xxxxxx) is designed to have a 2000rpm input. At the designed input, the auger will spin at 945rpm. The single stage snow throwers do rotate fairly fast.

I have a 46 snow thrower which I have changed the auger sprocket from a 40 tooth to a 34 tooth. This increased my auger speed to 1150rpm.

I hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the quick response, So it looks like I am ok with 1750 as my imput speed and maybe I will need to speed it up. I had a MF12 with a blower years ago and it spun fast too. However it was under powered to throw snow more than 10 feet. I am hoping with this JD 46 on My 30 HP ztr it will throw it further. What do you guys have yours mounted on (HP wise) and how far are you able to throw snow? I know it will vary depending on snow (wet, dry).thanks Brian

nairb35,

If your ztr has a 30hp engine, I would think you have enough reserve power to increase the auger speed. Do you own a laser tachometer? I would check the auger rpm, as currently configured. That will give you a baseline. The faster the auger is spinning, the farther the snow will be thrown. Just keep in mind that this rotating assembly was designed for ~1000rpm.

I have my 46 on a 22hp John Deere 445. With the smaller auger sprocket and machine belting at center of auger (to close the gap between the auger and the shell), I can easily throw 20-30ft, depending on snow type.

2000 rpm input to the gearbox. I have mine mounted on my 22 hp 445 but it was on a 19.9 hp 400 before this. All stock configured it would throw it 20 ft with the short chute all painted and waxed smooth. This year I am excited to see how my long chute does with two more hp. Yours should rip.

No I do not have a tachometer. However with a few measurements and some powerful modeling software, (solidworks) i could figure it out. I will post pics later, I still have to finish the build and have a little fabing and welding to do. I think I am going to have to wait for some snow to see if I have to change the the sprocket from 40 to 35 tooth. Thanks guys

This is thelaser tachometer I own. It is very handy. I find it to fairly accurate, considering the price. I have witnessed several engines that did not achieve the specified RPM. This tachometer will help dial the RPM in. I feel, by using this instrument, you will receive real-world results. It also makes the math a lot simpler. (Starting to sound like a salesman - Sorry)

This is the 34 tooth sprocket I purchased. Surplus Center has several different sizes of sprockets. The 46 thrower uses #50 chain and the auger has a 1" diameter shaft.

I believe you are on the right track by completing your fabrication and assembly. From that point, it will be more economical to change the auger sprocket (and shorten the chain) for increased rotational speed. Belts and pulleys can get expensive.

I am also very interested in your results. Good Luck!

I would recommend to those following this thread to subscribe, as this thread will likely be moved to a different section of the forum.

Wow, I didn't know that those laser tachs where that cheap I love having the right tools for any job, so I think I will buy one.I bought my gear box from surplus center, they have a darn near everything a guy that likes to tinker would ever need. Thanks werfitter 40 for posting the chain and shaft size that will be maybe useful info for future referance. I am very excited to finish my build and see what it will do. Being that it is Christmas eve my wife would not be happy if I spent it in the shop but I have the next 10 days off of work and will for sure finish it by monday. Merry Christmas to all

Thanks guys for all the help I got it all fabbed up and welded.Ran the wires for the electric chute. Now all I need is new skid plates and I can at least blow snow.I was freaking out that we would get a big dump of snow and I would not be ready.Looks like that was all for naught with el-nina or nonea or what ever they call it.I posted here in the John Deere section, knowing I probably would have the thread moved by the moderators because I knew I would get the awnsers I needed and low and behold you guys came through.I will post pics after I get the sub frame and everthing sandblasted and painted.I have dialup for my IP so pic's are going to take some time to up load please be patient.

I will have to keep a look out for a spout. I love where you put your lights I thought for a while where to put mine and decided on the spoiler, I can mow lawn in the dark.I have the electric spout so I would have to take that into account .

Thanks. FYI... I do plan to move the lights up higher on brackets off the blower mount next to the tractor hood before winter. They vibrate too much up there when the blower isn't under load. They also make it harder to clean the snow off before backing it into my heat shop don't I don't get big water puddles. I plan to add hyd spout rotation if time permits. (The way this years weather is going - who knows how early winter will come) :banghead3
