I have a JD 318 with the Onan. I have had this for 10 years. Ever since I have had this, the electric PTO works fine, but once I mow and get everything hot and disengage the PTO sometimes it will not engage. Sometimes it will if I slow the motor down and idle for 2-3 minutes, but lately I have to shut it off and let it cool for 30-45 minutes then it will work like it used to.
This clutch has never been off, and I was wondering if it is going bad or if it is out of adjustment?

I had the exact same problem on my 420 and it was the air gap on the clutch. Had it adjusted and no more problems.

Update:

Went out and bought some cheap feeler gauges. There were 3 slots to check, and after some minor adjustments I got it dialed in at .18. Clutch seems to engage allot quicker, ad after mowing with it for a bit it will re-engage when hot. Seems like I only turned each bolt less than 1/4-1/8th turn.
Works great now!
