Hello all, my first tractor ever is a JD 1830. The biggest question I have is how the tranny works. I can't seem to find any info. The previous owner said that it was a hydrostatic transmission. I have a basic understanding of, say, the kind used on a lawn tractor or a forklift. Why would I need gear shift sticks (for lack of a better term), if I am not manually moving shift collars/dogs etc.? Do the hydraulics turn an input shaft in the transmission? Any tid-bits of knowledge would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Welcome to this forum.
JD utility tractors similar to 1830 did not have a hydrostatic transmission. These tractors could have option of hyd controlled hi-lo or reverser. Control lever for either options would be a handle on LH side of steering wheel similar to turn signal control lever on an automobile or pickup. You can download a free operators manual at Search for Equipment Publications - Technical Information Store or call 800-522-7448..

Gearshift pattern decal is shown below. Clutch pedal must be depressed when changing gears represented by decal & tractor should be sitting still.
